Maggie Gyllenhaal Says It Was 'Strange' Directing Husband Peter Sarsgaard in a Sex Scene for 'The Lost Daughter'

Maggie Gyllenhaal suits up for an appearance on The View in New York City on Wednesday (December 15).

During the interview, the 44-year-old actress discussed her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, and revealed that it was a bit awkward to direct her husband Peter Sarsgaard in the film’s sex scenes.

“I did think at first, ‘Maybe it’s not a great idea,’ and then I was like, ‘I’ve been with my husband for a long time. We’ve been through so much. I know my husband loves me,” Maggie said. The pair tied the knot back in 2009 and share two children, Ramona, 15, and Gloria Ray, 9.

“Who could do this better than him?’ Really, nobody,” she continued. “The sexuality, it’s strange; it’s a weird part of our job. The thing that makes the scene hot, I think, is that he’s hot for her mind — her mind. What is sexier than that? He’s like, ‘I am into your mind.’ … Really, that kind of sexy is irresistible.”

The film is based on Elena Ferrante‘s novel of the same name and also stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.
