Chris Daughtry Reflects on the 'Guilt' He Feels After the Deaths of His Mother & Stepdaughter

Chris Daughtry is reflecting on the tragic loss he experienced last year.

In November 2021, the American Idol alum’s 25-year-old step-daughter Hannah died by suicide while under the influence of narcotics. In a statement released after her death, he announced he had also lost his mother to cancer shortly before Hannah‘s passing.

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday (June 23), Chris discussed what it’s been like navigating his grief over the past year.

“I dealt with both differently, processed both losses very differently — the common denominator in both is the guilt,” he shared. “The ‘I wish I would have said this. I wish I would’ve done this. I wish I would’ve called more.’”

He continued, “Those moments of guilt are the hardest because you can’t do anything about it. There’s always going to be reminders of what you could’ve done or whatever, and I tend to beat myself up a lot over it.”

Chris married Hannah’s mother Deanna Daughtry in 2000 and was on tour when news broke that she had died. He went on to postpone a series of shows in the wake of her passing.

The family subsequently released her cause of death, sharing that she had struggled with mental illness “from a young age,” and “was in and out of therapy and treatment centers” over the years.

Deanna also slammed rumors surrounding her daughter’s death in a post on social media. You can see what she wrote here.
