'Minions: The Rise of Gru' Breaks the 4th of July Box Office Record
The animated family film is expected to push past $127.9 million over the holiday weekend, via Variety, which will break the record for the highest film opening over the 4th of July weekend, overtaking 2011′s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which brought in $115.9 million over four days.
The movie has almost matched 2015’s Minions as well, which brought in $115 million over three days).
The Fourth of July ticket sales are a sign of the theaters returning to normalcy in the pandemic era: in 2021, overall revenues were just $69 million. Traditionally, the weekend revenues average between $150 million and $200 million.
