Oscar-Winning Director Paul Haggis Loses Civil Rape Trial, Found Liable on All Counts

Paul Haggis has lost his civil rape trial.

The two-time Oscar-winning director of Crash was sued by former events publicist Haleigh Breest, who claimed that she was raped by Haggis in his Soho apartment back in 2013. She decided to file the lawsuit against him after he condemned Harvey Weinstein in the press back in 2017 when the producer was accused of sexual assault.

The jury in the trial found Haggis liable on all three counts of rape and sexual abuse and awarded Breest $7.5 million, according to Variety. The jury also recommended punitive damages, which will be decided next week.

Haleigh said in a statement after the decision, “I am grateful that I had the opportunity to seek justice and accountability in court — and that the jury chose to follow the facts — and believed me. The greatest source of comfort through this five year legal journey has been the support I felt from the women who bravely shared their own stories and let me know I wasn’t alone.”

Leah Remini made a claim about the case earlier this week.
