Netflix Reportedly Used Controversial Princess Diana Interview That Prince William Requested Never Air Again In 'Harry & Meghan' Without Permission

Two clips of an interview with Princess Diana that appear in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s Netflix series Harry & Meghan are sparking a conversation.

Royal watchers will likely recognize the two clips from the late royal’s interview with Martin Bashir, which was mired in controversy after a report revealed that the content was obtained through “deceitful behavior.”

The footage in question belonged to BBC and Prince William has asked that it not air again. A source at the network revealed that it was used without explicit permission, raising questions about fair use in media.

“As we have said before, the BBC will never show the programme again; nor will we license it in whole or in part to other broadcasters – the decision to show the interview is a matter for Netflix,” a spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

The outlet noted that Netflix and BBC have a “fair dealing” arrangement, which allows them to share footage. It is assumed that this is how they came upon the clips.

Sources told the Telegraph that BBC higher-ups were allegedly “mystified” regarding how the streamer obtained the clips. However, a source at Netflix emphasized to the publication that the material was legal to use.

“All material in the series has either been cleared or approved for use by UK/US legal counsel under fair dealing/ fair use copyright exceptions,” they said.
