Alec Baldwin's 'Rust' Criminal Charges Will Be Dropped, Statement Released By His Lawyers

Just a few months ago in January 2023, Alec Baldwin was formally charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter involving the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer on the set of his film Rust.

Now, word has spread that the charges are being dropped against the 65-year-old actor.

“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” Alec‘s lawyers Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro told Just Jared.

Deadline reports that the paperwork will be filed soon, possibly today, clearing Alec “without prejudice.” This is an important distinction. According to a US law site, “’Dismissed without prejudice’ means that a case is dismissed for now, but the prosecutor or the petitioner can still re-file the case at a later point. By contrast, a case dismissed with prejudice is finally over and cannot be reopened or re-filed.”

So, the charges could be re-filed against him, should investigations head in that direction once again. At the time he was charged, Alec‘s lawyer released a statement and slammed the filing as a “miscarriage of justice.”

The on-set armorer that day, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, still has her charges standing against her at this time.

If you don’t know the tragic story, Halyna was shot and killed on the set of Rust in October of 2021 when Alec pulled the trigger of a prop gun. Shortly after the shooting, Alec made a statement about her death. The transcript of what happened in the moments after the shooting were also revealed a short time later.
