Angela Bassett Will Receive Honorary Oscar With Mel Brooks & More

Angela Bassett is getting her Oscar!

The 64-year-old Black Panther actress will be honored with an honorary trophy alongside filmmaker Mel Brooks, as well as Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter and editor Carol Littleton.

According to the announcement, via Variety, the four are set to receive their awards at this years’ upcoming Governors Awards that will be held in November.

“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans,” Academy President Janet Yang shared in a statement.

She added about the honorees, “Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting. Mel Brooks lights up our hearts with his humor, and his legacy has made a lasting impact on every facet of entertainment. Carol Littleton’s career in film editing serves as a model for those who come after her. A pillar of the independent film community, Michelle Satter has played a vital role in the careers of countless filmmakers around the world.”

According to The Academy, the Honorary Award is “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.”

Angela has been nominated for an Oscar twice – in 1994 for Best Actress for What’s Love Got To Do With It, and most recently, at the 2022 Oscars for Best Supporting Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She was the fan favorite to win.

For Mel, he has been nominated three times, and won once – in 1969 for Best Original Screenplay for The Producers.
