2 Chainz gets serious on the carpet at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards held at Madison Square Garden on Sunday (August 28) in New York City.

The 38-year-old rapper was joined on the carpet by Chance the Rapper, who was rocking a pair of overalls and struck some funny poses.

Later in the evening, Chance‘s friend Future took to the stage for a performance and Chance couldn’t help but dance along.

“This is what pure happiness looks like, in case you were wondering #VMAs,” MTV wrote on their Twitter along with a video of Chance in the audience.

Rihanna hits the stage for the opening performance at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards held at Madison Square Garden on Sunday (August 28) in New York City.

The 28-year-old singer is performing four times throughout the night as she is the recipient of this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

For the first performance, she danced to “Don’t Stop the Music” and then sang “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been.”

The 21-year-old singer is set to perform “Closer” with The Chainsmokers during the show!

Just last week, Halsey and The Chainsmokers‘s hit song jumped from the sixth spot to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100!

Earlier in the week, JoJo sent some love to her fans with a sweet tweet.

“#TeamJoJo – you have really truly give me life. I cannot thank you enough for making it possible for me to do what I LOVE,” she wrote, just before dropping the “F*ck Apologies” remixes on Spotify. Check them below!

The 30-year-old actress and SNL star was joined on the red carpet by comedian Matteo Lane, as well as former SNL actor Jay Pharoah.

Jay won’t be returning for the new season of SNL, but Sasheer and most of last year’s cast will be back. Taran Killam is also not returning.

Alessia Cara and Troye Sivan hit the red carpet at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards held at Madison Square Garden on Sunday (August 28) in New York City.

The two young music stars performed together to kick off the pre-show that evening. On the red carpet, Alessia posed for pics with her recent tourmate, singer Kevin Garrett.

Alessia started the performance with her song “Wild Things” and they segued into Troye‘s song “Wild.” She then wrapped it up with her current single, “Scars to Your Beautiful.”
