Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner 2049' Sequel Show Officially Ordered at Amazon!

Amazon has officially ordered a sequel show for Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner 2049.

Variety confirmed the news and that the title will be Blade Runner 2099. There’s speculation that it will be set 50 years after the events that took place in the prior movie, which was released in 2017 and starred the likes of Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto. The movie claimed the top spot at the box office upon release.

It was based on the 1982 film Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford. The movie achieved cult status over the years.

Ridley will executive produce the new series alongside showrunner Silka Luisa, Michael Green and others.

“The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios, told Variety.

In case you missed it, the director of Blade Runner 2049 responded to criticisms relating to the show’s female characters. Here’s what he had to say!

Blade Runner 2049 Director Responds to Criticism of Female Characters

Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve is responding to the critics who were unhappy with how female characters were portrayed in the sequel to Blade Runner.

“I am very sensitive to how I portray women in movies,” Denis told Vanity Fair. “This is my ninth feature film and six of them have women in the lead role. The first Blade Runner was quite rough on the women; something about the film noir aesthetic. But I tried to bring depth to all the characters. For Joi, the holographic character, you see how she evolves. It’s interesting, I think. What is cinema? Cinema is a mirror on society. Blade Runner is not about tomorrow; it’s about today. And I’m sorry, but the world is not kind on women.”

Denis continued, “There’s a sense in American cinema: you want to portray an ideal world. You want to portray a utopia. That’s good”dreams for a better world, to advocate for something better, yes. But if you look at my movies, they are exploring today’s shadows. The first Blade Runner is the biggest dystopian statement of the last half century. I did the follow-up to that, so yes, it’s a dystopian vision of today. Which magnifies all the faults. That’s what I’ll say about that.”

Many critics were very harsh on the movie’s portrayal of women – especially Mackenzie Davis‘ character, who The Guardian described as a “sex worker who is literally used as a puppet.”

Ryan Gosling & Harrison Ford Hung Out in an Unexpected Location!

Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford pose as their Blade Runner 2049 characters for the Entertainment Weekly cover!

“They say never meet your heroes. But the addendum to that is: unless they’re Harrison Ford,” Ryan told the mag.

“Harrison didn’t start working until a month into production, so we had a lot of time to just imagine how that might be, and waiting for that moment to come, and hoping that we were making something that would be satisfying to him,” Ryan said about waiting to work with Harrison as the nerves grew.

Ryan also recalled one memorable time when they sat in a hot tub together.

“Talking to Harrison fully clothed in a hot tub is an experience I never thought I’d have,” Ryan added. “If you had told me a few years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
