Netflix's 'Ginny & Georgia' Season 2 Plans - Show's Creators Talk What's to Come (Spoilers)

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Ginny & Georgia is already shaping up to be one of Netflix‘s next big shows, and already, fans are wondering about whether a second season is on the way for the mother-daughter dramedy.

The first season follows teenager Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and her mother, Georgia (Brianne Howey), as they settle in a new town, hoping for a fresh start – but the secrets in Georgia’s past may jeopardize their future.

The creators of the show chatted with O Magazine about what to expect with a potential Season 2.

“We always knew we wanted to build to that cliffhanger. Everything else in the middle was a fun discovery,” showrunner Debra J. Fisher explained, going on to say that, if renewed, a new season would explore the fallout of Ginny’s decision to run away from her mother, Georgia, with her little brother Austin (Diesel La Torraca) in tow.

“She’s doing exactly what her mother does: Always running,” the showrunner went on to explain.

“Season 1 really did feel like a season 1. We just started uncovering some of the layers for all characters, across the board, that we want to dive into. Deb and I are hoping we get the chance,” creator Sarah Lampert adds.

The creators also discussed casting for the show, explaining that Antonia was found quickly, but Brianne took longer.

“It was on our very last day. We were supposed to have all these decisions made. Then we received a very late tape one night from Brianne Howey who had just returned from Europe, getting engaged to her fiancé [Matt Ziering]. We watched it and we were like, we have to have this woman come in and read with Tony (Antonia) right away.”

Among the many things to explore in another season is the mother-daughter relationship itself and the many revelations about their family: Ginny has to grapple with the fact that her mother killed her last husband, Kenny, for instance.

“The relationship between Ginny and Georgia is the third character in the show. It lives on its own. It’s constantly changing and evolving. There are so many scenes where the two of them are communicating with each other over everyone’s head. They’re intrinsically wound,” said Sarah.

Ginny’s experience as a biracial woman also creates a divide between the two.

“Ginny is going through the world in a different way than Ginny is and Georgia can’t ever grasp that. In the same way, Ginny can’t understand the trauma and sacrifices Georgia went through to get Ginny to Wellsbury. There’s a lot of room for them to hurt each other’s feelings with what they can’t understand about each other,” she explained.

Although Season 2 has not yet been confirmed, it is likely that it wouldn’t come out until 2022.

The creators also addressed those Gilmore Girl comparisons.

'Ginny & Georgia' Showrunner Addresses The 'Gilmore Girls' Comparisons

Netflix‘s brand new show, Ginny & Georgia, has been drawing some comparisons to another popular mother and daughter duo series – Gilmore Girls.

Showrunner Sarah Lampert opened up the comparisons and revealed that it wasn’t their intention with the show.

“It was definitely an inspiration, but no more so than My So-Called Life, Buffy, Veronica Mars,” Sarah shared with TV Line in a new interview.

She adds that any stories that had “strong, dynamic, smart, funny, witty, powerful female characters just inspired what I wanted to write about.”

“I think that a relationship between a mother and a daughter, especially a teenage daughter, is one of the most complicated, nuanced, messy, push-and-pull relationships that you have in your life,” Sarah continued, “and I think there’s room for, honestly, hundreds of shows about them. Mother-and-daughter relationships are so interesting to me, and every Mother’s Day, I just send my mom an apology card for the high school years.”

Scott Porter, who plays Mayor Paul Randolph on the series, faced some backlash with Gilmore Girls fans after posting about Ginny & Georgia on his social media, emphasizing that the Netflix show was “so much MORE”.

“I didn’t mean it in the way that we are a greater some of its parts than Gilmore Girls was. What I meant was we have a lot of different storylines that Gilmore Girls would never have stepped into,” he told E! News about the misunderstanding. “We deliver a different kind of storytelling. And, yes, the mother-daughter comparisons, of course, are right there.”

Ginny & Georgia's Brianne Howey Gets Support In The Cutest Way From Fiance Matt Ziering

Brianne Howey is one of the stars of Netflix’s new show, Ginny & Georgia, which premiered on the streaming service this week.

The 31-year-old actress is Georgia, young mom to fifteen year old Ginny Miller (Antonia Gentry), who often feels more mature than her thirty year old mother.

After years on the run, Georgia desperately wants to put down roots in picturesque New England and give her family something they’ve never had… a normal life. But it’s not all carpool and Kombucha as Georgia’s past threatens her and her family’s new way of life… and Georgia will do anything to protect her family.

If Brianne looks familiar, it’s because she’s been part of some very popular shows, including The Odd Couple with Matthew Perry, The Passage with Mark-Paul Gosselaar and she was even on The CW’s Batwoman for a few episodes.

Brianne has been getting a lot of sweet support for the series from her fiancé, lawyer Matt Ziering, on social media.

In an interview, Brianne revealed that she first met Matt at a bar in Los Angeles, where he had been celebrating after taking the California bar exam. When they saw each other again at the same place the next night, they connected.

Matt and Brianne got engaged after a few years of dating and had planned to wed in October 2020. However, COVID-19 derailed their plans for now.

Netflix Reveals Trailer for New Series 'Ginny & Georgia' - Watch!

The trailer for Ginny & Georgia is here!

The upcoming new series stars Brianne Howey and newcomer Antonia Gentry as the title characters, and premieres February 24 on Netflix.

Here’s a synopsis: Angsty and awkward fifteen year old Ginny Miller (Gentry) often feels she doesn’t measure up to her thirty year old mother, the irresistible and dynamic Georgia Miller (Howey). Growing up on the move, Georgia desperately wants to put down roots in picturesque New England and give her family something they’ve never had…a normal life. But it’s not all carpool and Kombucha as Georgia’s past follows them to threaten her and her family’s fresh start.

“As a young girl, I always wanted to watch a TV show that had a heroine who looked like me and Ginny was finally THAT GIRL!” director and producer Anya Adams shared.

“Her story was compelling and exciting and I wanted to be a part of bringing that to life. The opportunity to be part of creating a coming-of-age series with an all-female creative team that is centered on a mixed-race young woman was ultimately the draw for me.”

“We wanted Ginny & Georgia to be a fun, feel-good ride about women, by women, for everyone; one that depicted a nuanced and complicated mother-daughter relationship, and layered female friendships in a way that isn’t always seen in shows,” showrunner Debra J. Fisher added.

These Netflix shows also just got renewed.
