Emma Watson Tweets Support For Trans Lives After JK Rowling's Tweets

The 28-year-old actress and activist showed her support for her trans fans on Twitter.

“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,” Emma started.

She went on, “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.”

Emma also revealed that she’s donated to UK charity, Mermaids, and Mama Cash, which both support the LGBTQ+ community.

JK Rowling Defends Herself Amid Anti-Trans Claims

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has written a lengthy essay about claims that she’s transphobic, dating back years to tweets she has “liked” in the past that led to claims that she is a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist).

“I’ve met trans people, and read sundry books, blogs and articles by trans people, gender specialists, intersex people, psychologists, safeguarding experts, social workers and doctors, and followed the discourse online and in traditional media. On one level, my interest in this issue has been professional, because I’m writing a crime series, set in the present day, and my fictional female detective is of an age to be interested in, and affected by, these issues herself, but on another, it’s intensely personal, as I’m about to explain,” she wrote in an essay published to her website.

“All the time I’ve been researching and learning, accusations and threats from trans activists have been bubbling in my Twitter timeline. This was initially triggered by a ‘like’. When I started taking an interest in gender identity and transgender matters, I began screenshotting comments that interested me, as a way of reminding myself what I might want to research later. On one occasion, I absent-mindedly ‘liked’ instead of screenshotting. That single ‘like’ was deemed evidence of wrongthink, and a persistent low level of harassment began,” she continued.

Eddie Redmayne Releases Statement on JK Rowling's Tweets: 'Trans Women Are Women'

Eddie Redmayne stars in Harry Potter author JK Rowling‘s Fantastic Beasts movie series, and now, he’s condemning her anti-trans tweets.

“Respect for transgender people remains a cultural imperative, and over the years I have been trying to constantly educate myself,” Eddie told Variety. “This is an ongoing process. As someone who has worked with both J.K. Rowling and members of the trans community, I wanted to make it absolutely clear where I stand. I disagree with Jo’s comments. Trans women are women, trans men are men and non-binary identities are valid. I would never want to speak on behalf of the community but I do know that my dear transgender friends and colleagues are tired of this constant questioning of their identities, which all too often results in violence and abuse. They simply want to live their lives peacefully, and it’s time to let them do so.”

Eddie earned an Oscar nomination for his work in The Danish Girl, where he played the role of transgender woman Lili Elbe. Find out what he said about playing the role at the time.

J.K. Rowling's Latest Tweets Are Being Called Out as Transphobic - Read How Fans Responded

J.K. Rowling is once again being accused of being transphobic.

On Saturday (June 6), the 54-year-old author tweeted her frustration after an article wrote that “gender non-binary persons menstruate.”

J.K. then reposted the article, while also writing, “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

She didn’t stop there. J.K. tweeted again, saying, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”

J.K. also tweeted, “I’ve spent much of the last three years reading books, blogs and scientific papers by trans people, medics and gender specialists. I know exactly what the distinction is. Never assume that because someone thinks differently, they have no knowledge.”

Not long after her tweets, people started slamming J.K., accusing her of being transphobic.

“If you, like me, feel like JK Rowling is being pure Voldemort & you want to expelliarmus her v bad energy, how about donating to one of these awesome orgs supporting black trans people, a community that is disproportionately at risk of violence and murder,” comedian Mae Martin wrote.

This isn’t the first time J.K. has been in hot water for her comments about transgender people. Find out why GLAAD called her out last year.
