John Heard, best known for playing dad Peter McCallister in the Home Alone movies, has died at the age of 72.

The actor was found dead in his hotel room in Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday (July 21), according to TMZ.

A maid found Heard in his room and the authorities were called for a medical emergency, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. A cause of death is not yet known, but Heard had “minor back surgery” earlier in the week and was recovering at the hotel, so it’s possible that his death is connected to that.

John also had roles in movies like Big, Beaches, and the first Sharknado.
