Famed handbag designer Kate Spade passed away on Tuesday (June 5) at the age of 55 in an apparent suicide, and her fashion brand has released a statement on the tragedy.

“Kate Spade, the visionary founder of our brand, has passed. Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly heartbreaking time. We honor all the beauty she brought into this world,” the statement from the brand read on their Twitter account.

Kate began Kate Spade Handbags in 1993 with Andy Spade, who she ended up marrying in 1994. She sold the company in 2007 and launched a new fashion brand in 2016 called Frances Valentine, named for her now 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix Spade.

In an interview with WWD, Rachel said that she admired fashion “from afar.” She added, “But people around me have said that I’ve inherited little pieces of Katie’s style. For example, I love a good shoe and a good bag, and I know that she was largely influenced by my grandmother, her mother, June. Who actually, fun fact, Midge is slightly inspired by.”

When Rachel won the Golden Globe for her work on Amazon series, Kate told Page Six, “I am beside myself! My daughter [Frances, 13] and I jumped up and down when she won. She deserves this recognition as she’s put her heart and soul into the role. We are insanely proud.”

The 55-year-old handbag designer was pronounced dead at her New York City home at 10:20 am ET.

“Law enforcement officials: Fashion designer Kate Spade found dead in New York in apparent suicide,” the Associated Press reported via their Twitter account. TMZ also updated that it appears to be death by hanging.
