Demi Lovato Opens Up About Her 'Sober In Moderation' Decision With 'Paper' Magazine

Demi Lovato is a glamorous alien on the cover of Paper magazine.

In the issue, the 28-year-old singer opens up about her new documentary, Dancing With The Devil, which is out this week.

Here’s what she had to share:

On the ups and downs of the past year: “Going back over the past year, I thought my life was going to turn out a lot differently than it has. At one point I was engaged to a man, and now I’m very much not. And so I just wanted to allow myself the freedom to match my outside to what I feel like on the inside, and that’s what I’ve done.”

On ignoring the negativity: “I think it was right after I got out of rehab in 2018. I saw an article somewhere that said I was morbidly obese, and that is the most triggering thing that you could possibly write about somebody with an eating disorder. That sucked, and I wanted to quit, I wanted to use, wanted to give up. And then I just realized that if I don’t look at those things then they can’t affect me. So, I stopped looking and I just really try not to look at anything negative. I think the positives outweigh the negatives. I think that if they didn’t, I wouldn’t be doing this.”

On her choice to be “sober in moderation”: “The way that I’ve come about it is, I went back to treatment after [the overdose], in 2019, after slipping up with substances. I had done so well with my eating disorder, in comparison to the years before. And when I went back, my therapist, my eating disorder specialist there, was like, ‘How do you feel with food recovery?’ And I was like, ‘I feel really great, but I think it’s because I’ve legalized so much.’ I feel like I wanted to get a great understanding of it for myself before I told the world about it, and also, it’s just really important to note that just because I am trying this doesn’t mean it’s for everybody. Just like the dogmatic views of complete sobriety, that isn’t a one size fits all solution for everybody.”

Here are all the new things we’ve learned about Demi from Dancing With The Devil, so far.

Lakeith Stanfield Talks Playing William O'Neal In 'Judas & The Black Messiah' With 'Flaunt'

Lakeith Stanfield goes shirtless under his tweed jacket in this shot from his Flaunt magazine cover story.

The 29-year-old actor, wearing Bottega Veneta in the feature, opened up about taking on the role of William O’Neal in Judas and the Black Messiah – a role that just earned him his first Oscar nomination.

“I realized that in order to be able to play him, I had to find some human element that aligned me with him,” Lakeith told the magazine about playing the role of the historical Black Panther member and secret FBI agent.

He adds, “People aren’t only what they do. There’s a multiplicity and complexity to what it means to be human, and I wanted to find those details, to see if I couldn’t attack it from that way.”

Lakeith added that he can’t “really seek to ‘justify’ what he did, because to me that’s kind of the same as judging it. But I did want to just understand…What I came up with was better than my initial judgement, which was just like ‘F*** this guy, he’s just this fearful coward, he sold out Chairman Fred Hampton.’ While there may be some truth to some of those things, I think he wanted to be free. He wanted the same things that Chairman Fred Hampton wanted—to an extent. Freedom. To be free from the shackles of things that you feel are oppressing you.”

Judas and the Black Messiah, also starring Daniel Kaluuya, was also nominated for five other categories, including Best Picture. You can watch the trailer for the movie here…

Lakeith also opened up about playing the villain in the movie.

“Sometimes things that are heroic don’t always look heroic…Sometimes you have to say and do things that are maybe not so favorable, for the betterment of pushing and moving things forward, and making a better life,” he says. “All of those things to me, are heroic things. If you can live life in the spirit of that truth, then you, my friend, are a hero.”

Stacey Abrams Talks About Creating Change & What She Wants to Do Next

Stacey Abrams is rightfully on the cover of the Changemakers Issue for Marie Claire‘s April 2021 issue.

The voting rights activist and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate has been credited with helping the Democrats regain control of the Senate thanks to her work in the state. Here is what she shared with the mag:

On her success: “My success is tied at the most base level with the success of my people, and my people are the South. My people are Americans. My people are people of color. My success can only ever be real if I’m doing it for the success of others.”

On defending voting rights: “I want to be defending voting rights. I want us to effectively leverage the census and redistricting, and I want us to serve the disproportionately harmed communities. I want us to rebuild the public infrastructure of the South, using COVID not as an excuse for what was broken but as a template for what we need to do right.”

On change: “Because there’s nothing permanent about the change that we’re making until people believe it’s a change they should defend and maintain. And so every election, every fight, you’ve got to remind people that they have the capacity to win, and you have to do it anew.”

On continuing her work in Georgia: “If you can do it [in Georgia], you can prove that it is possible in enclaves that have given up. If you can do this stuff in the Deep South— if you can elect a Black Southern preacher and a Jewish son of an immigrant to the U.S. Senate while Donald Trump sits in the White House, then, by God, everything else is possible.”

As for her audition, she admits, “I 100% was prepared for the project to fall through, Because it happens. And not only that, I just didn’t even believe any of it was real because it was happening so fast, because it happened off the back of one video audition. I was sure someone else was going to come along and take the part from me.”

Whitney‘s Wonderland magazine cover was shot by Heather Hazzan, and is currently available for pre-order at WonderlandMagazine.com!

If you missed them, Whitney was just seen filming scenes for the upcoming HBO Max revival series with her co-star Eli Brown.
