“It reminded me of everything that we students had been through in Mexico…You’re always afraid that if you express yourself the government is going to silence you.”

On connecting with her Roma character:
“I recognized that woman. We had demonstrated and it could have ended in the same way. It made me realize just how little things have changed in Mexico.”

Billie Eilish: 'When I Was Older (Music Inspired by Roma)' Stream, Lyrics & Download - Listen Now!

Billie Eilish is back with a new track for the new year!

The 17-year-old singer-songwriter just released her new song “When I Was Older,” inspired by the critically acclaimed Roma.

PHOTOS: Check out the latest pics of Billie Eilish

The song was written by Billie and her longtime collaborator, brother Finneas O’Connell.

“When we were composing the song, we wanted to write from within the narrative of the movie and the scenes that struck us the most from it. Having access to the sounds used in the film proved to be invaluable to help us convey this. Lines like ‘memories burn like a forest fire’ are accompanied by the sounds of the trees burning in the woods outside the house. The chorus, has the ocean sounds overplayed on it. We were also able to take sounds like the student protest shouts and Borras barking and turn them into rhythmic percussive elements to help drive the song. Nothing about this song would exist without the film, which is exactly what we love about it,” the two said.
