Ann Curry Confirms 'Today' Show Exit

Today co-host Ann Curry has confirmed her exit from the morning show after a week of speculation.

The 55-year-old journalist has served as a co-host on the show opposite Matt Lauer for the past year and will be entering into a new multi-year contract with NBC to cover the world’s biggest stories via network specials.

“It’s going to be a bit of a tough day,” Ann told USA Today of the announcement she is expected to make on-air on Thursday (June 28). “I’m going to have to tell our viewers. That’s what makes me more emotional than anything. I don’t want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them.”

“You know, Matt and I have had great on-air chemistry for 14 years, been part of the No. 1 winning team for a history-making number of years,” she added. “That said, I just finished my freshman year as co-host. In every single co-host’s first year, there have been kinks to be worked out, and perhaps I deserve as much blame for that as anyone.”

WHO DO YOU THINK should replace Ann Curry as co-host of Today?

Personally I liked her and don’t think she should be replaced, but I understand Matt Lauer has had an affair with the person that is going to replace her, so it’s too bad ABC is letting Matt’s anatomy think for them.

  • Ashley

No one. Matt Lauer is the one who should leave. He’s rude and arrogant.

  • Kristen

Dani, you are so right. It is too bad ABC is letting Matt’s anatomy think for them. Especially since Matt and his thinking thing work for NBC.

The Today Show is on NBC, not ABC. ABC is not involved.

With regard to the statement about Ann’s replacement, it is highly inflammatory. What is your source for that information?

Ann Curry is a class act and highly regarded and talented journalist. She does not deserve this unceremonious departure. She was part of a team at The Today Show. She should not have been singled out. If there was a decline in the rating, it was failings of the team, not one individual.

Lauer always seems to be phoning it in. Why he gets the big bucks is beyond me. Curry always seemed classy and very sincere, plus she got the best interviews. She’ll land on her feet.

  • jo

she looks great for 55. I comfort myself by thinking that pic’s 20 years old.

  • Tired of al and Matt

How is Al’s annoying butt stil there? Al and Matt need to be replaced with hotter men.

  • anon

Obviously I am not their target audience as I have never got the appeal of people like Meridith and other “bright shiny faces”. Have to admit I don’t watch American morning shows at all but when I have “dropped in” I always felt that Ann provided me with the gravitas that the others seemed lacking. I like her unaffected style. I think she was wasted on shows like this and should have and could have been a worthwhile foreign correspondent, but that would have taken sacrifice and a morning show gig must seem very enticing. Can’t believe this is the last we’ll see of her. She’ll show up somewhere else; just hope she doesn’t choose the Connie Chung route.

I for one hope the show continues to loose ratings. I liked Ann it’s a shame they are dropping her. I honestly fine Savannah boring and if she gets the job I’m done watching…I will tune in to ABC from now on.

second time my comment was deleted. this is bullsh*t. apparently having an opinion is ruled out. thanks.

    matt loser = cheating di*ck.

everyone can call actors on here dirty wh*res and the comment sticks. but have an opinion about an arrogant ‘reporter’ and its taken off.

Gone are the days of “Katie, Matt, Al & Ann . . . ” It was a catchy little show jingle that I thought really capture the chemistry of all four. For years I enjoyed watching that team until they broke up with Katie leaving and producers bringing in way too many people, along with a really unnecessary fourth hour.

It’s way too long. That’s the problem. Passing over longtime “Today Show” folks like Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotbe for newbie Savannah Guthrie, who just came in last year from nowhere (really as a legal pundit on such Sunday morning shows as The Christ Matthews Show), I think, would be highly rude, compound the problem, and be quite redundant. That’s why the producers look bad now. They went outside the family to get Meredith when it was Ann’s turn after Kati. Then they turned to her after Meredith left. And now they want to do the same to Natalie and Hoda? It’s not right and I believe will not sit well with longtime “Today Show” fans like me.

I personally think they should pick Hoda for the spot. That way they could get her away from that damn, obnoxious, racist ass Kathie Lee Gifford !! And Hoda could get back to her journalistic roots. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind Tamron Hall in the spot. They need some color and diversity in that co-anchor/co-host spot. To replace a minority (Ann) with a non-minority in that position, would be a bad look for the show.

    Good Morning I come.
Ann Curry was the only reason I watched the Today show.Matt Lauer is a pompous ass.

  • Notafan

Who cares? I say replace all of them.

There should be a limit to how long they can stay on, it gets incredibly boring to watch them after a while. Pull them after 5 years!

  • FrG

I don’t live in the US so i can’t say i know Ann Curry but i actually don’t like her….

I saw that interview she made of Brad Pitt in Cannes (for Festival de Cannes) where she literally grabbed her face… So unprofessionnal…!!

And a recent interview of Kristen Stewart on the “Today Show” to promote “Snow white and the Huntsman” and Ann Curry was like a ridiculous ass-kisser, she was just scratching Kristen’s back in a kind of rude way.

    That’s the image i have of her…!

  • KissThis

I’m a fan of Ann’s and it really frustrates me that she’s leaving. She is always so classy and professional in my opinion. I cannot stand Matt Lauer.

  • JustBecause

You are all going to hate me for this, but I believe the producers put Ann in that spot after Meredith left because they felt “they should give her a chance”. She was picked over before and they didn’t want to do it again. We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes and their is much more politics involving this than we will ever know. IMO..she just didn’t have the gusto that Katie and Meredith had.

  • ali

I can’t stand Matt – he is soooo arrogant – he dosnt deserve the
big salary . old aging bold ugly man .

anne is a fantastic journalist – its a shame she is leaving .

  • Da Truth

    Matt Lauer is an ass!

I hate to say it but I loved Ann Curry. Since I’ve been at my job at Dish for so long, I have sunk into a morning routine that included watching the Today’s show with her and Matt Lauer. It sounds foolish but I feel like I developed a relationship with that morning crew, at least indirectly. My DVR was automatically set to record Today so, even on the most hectic of mornings, I could still sip my coffee and watch it once I got my kids out the door. Thankfully my Hopper whole home DVR could record up to three things at once since my husband is more of a Good Morning America fan. I might switch over myself now that I’ve seen firsthand the loyalty NBC has for their clan (or lack there of). Regardless of all the controversy surrounding her removal from the show, I’m sure Ann will be just fine.
