Liza‘s father is Vincente Minnelli, who was Judy‘s second husband. Lorna and Joey are the children of her third husband and manager, Sid Luft. The three kids haven’t always gotten along in the past, but they are reportedly on good terms right now.

Wow! What a voice and I love her rendition of the song “Over the Rainbow”.

  • daa

I don’t care for her voice personally. Too husky or something.

  • April

Amazing talent. She truly got a set of pipes.

  • lola2014

I can’t for the life of me figure out why they would ask her to sing to perform this song at the Oscars. It was embarrassingly awful.

  • den

let’s spell MINNELLI correctly, shall we??

  • Isabel

When they said Judy’s children would be present, I thought it was because they or at least her daughters would be performing it.

  • Najah

Well at least she wasn’t flying around the place on a trapeze for once. I agree with the other comments. Weird choice to have Pink sing this classic pretty song, her husky voice just doesn’t fit. She should stick to singing about how badass she thinks she is.

  • LT

I wanna know when it’ll be available on iTunes!

  • Disappointed

This was an embarrassment to Judy Garland’s original. This is just one of those songs NO ONE should attempt to sing…period. Pink is out of her league in attempting to bring justice to this song. Her voice cracks and goes silent at certain points, and she doesn’t have the vocal style or power to sing it the way Judy Garland did. In my opinion, they should have played this video on the big screen behind the stage –
Had they done so, the song would have kept it’s dignity.

  • chelle

Thought she sounded great. I’d LOVE to hear all the haters belt it out any better….. just saying. That being said no one will ever do it better than Judy Garland.

  • She Absolutely Rocked!

Some of you folks need hearing aids. Pink’s voice was spectacular! She did an excellent job with that song. Her voice is not too “husky.” It’s powerful. Also, she has the perfect voice for rocking out. Seriously, I can’t believe any of you could have the audacity to come here and attempt criticize Pink’s singing. My oh my! I’ve heard it all!

  • What?!

@Disappointed: An embarrassment? OMG! Judy Garland is gone and her version of the song is old. I was very pleased with Pink’s performance. Pink sings “effortlessly” every single time — and that was live.

  • Disappointed

The song is a classic and should be left unsung by all. Those who like the original classics can appreciate them for what they were. Pink may be fine for her brand of music, but she is out of place in her attempt to do justice to a song that is a classic and that was done by one of the greatest entertainers in movies and music. Pink is NO match for Judy Garland. If you watched the video I linked to, you would have heard Judy Garland’s daughter make a profound statement, “There’s one song that truly belongs ONLY to my mother’….I agree.

  • FussyB

Pink was stunning! Can’t sing? Pulleaze !! You can’t compare Judy Garlands version of this song and Pinks , each has its own place in time!

  • uh huh

@FussyB: I agree with YOU! I loved Garland, but I love Pink too, and Pink’s version did not irritate me one bit, bc at the end of the day, she’s still an excellent singer.

  • Nancy

As a musician, Pink ‘s voice was the wrong choice. While the song requires vocal power, it also requires dynamics, not silent pauses. Judy’s voice was emotional, Pink’s is not. These new singers mistake melismata and loudness for emotion most of the time.
Surely in all of Hollywood, there was a better singer for such a momentous tribute. I’m sure Liza and Lorna felt the same way.

  • also

Methinks a few of you bloggers basically don’t like Pink at all. If that’s the case, your arguments are MOOT!

  • Diedre

So, nobody should sing ‘Over the Rainbow’ ever again now that Judy is gone? Ridiculous.
Pink rocked it. She is an amazing lady with an incredible voice…a true performer.
The dimwits passing judgment while hiding behind their computer screen scarfing pork rinds and slamming Red Bull need to get their eyes and ears checked.

  • Meena

She was great. Loved the tone of her voice.

  • Tattedtwice

When I peruse the comments section on these things I always try to keep in mind that old saying about opinions being like ___holes….
That said, it seems the majority of us realize an excellent performance when we hear it, and Pink’s was just that. If there is one singer today that can tackle any genre with ease it’s Pink. And tonight, she did what she does best; she gave us a stunning performance worthy of the standing ovation she received.

  • Disappointed

Oh my!! You accuse others of ‘passing judgment’ then you do the same in stating ‘The dimwits passing judgment while hiding behind their computer screen scarfing pork rinds and slamming Red Bull need to get their eyes and ears checked.’

There is NO need to get into a knock- down- drag- out over this, we all have a right to state our opinions. Let’s do so with respect shall we? Attacking and belittling others will certainly not help matters.

Nancy, when you said ” Judy’s voice was emotional, Pink’s is not.” you nailed it. Thank you for your insight.
I don’t think anyone here stated Pink cannot sing, that isn’t the issue. Neither of Judy’s daughters have sung ‘over the rainbow’ {to my knowledge}, and rightly so. I reiterate the statement from one of Judy’s daughers, “There’s one song that truly belongs ONLY to my mother”.
Pink does a fine job in her own style of music, which is rock. She just doesn’t fit with the musicals of the 30s, 40s and 50s when MGM was in its heyday and musicals were wildly popular. That era has past, some things are better left untouched. One day, Pink’s fans will understand and appreciate wanting to keep things original and untouched.

  • Chrisb

Pink has an amazing voice and for a lot of the things she does there is no topping her. But she falls into this thing that sounds like she’s trying to prove something with the gymnastics.

If you listen to the Garland version from the movie, the song just comes out of her like she’s breathing – effortless, wistful, her singing totally supports the lyric.

It’s not a question of Pink having the chops, or the emotion. I just kept thinking “Just sing the song already! You don’t have to prove anything to us!” That reverse yodel thing was interesting the first 1000 times I heard it, but it’s not speaking to me anymore.

Even Garland in her later years, didn’t sing it with same ease as in the movie. Voices and styles change. But you can over do the gymnastics, physical and emotional.

  • giannalove

I can’t believe she was chosen to perform such an epic and beautiful song. Now she’s a good singer when it comes to her “badass” don’t mess with me style , she was just not fit for such a pretty and feminine song. Her voice is just harsh and sounded strained. You shouldn’t have to push so hard on such a whimsical song.

  • JJS

Producers messed up Why have a third-rater sing “Over the Rainbow” when you have Judy’s poignant original version on the film. Skip the imitation; go for the real thing. Shrill vs. truly emotional always under control..

  • Tom

@lola2014: Pink doesn’t know how to breath when she sings. She takes a breath in the middle of the word “over”. Not very good training.

  • Gina G.

I am 21 years old and I understand the Pink was trying to make the song sound more like today. But she took license in changing the melody in certain parts and no one should do that with any classic song. People always do this with “God Bless America, the Star Spangled Benner etc. Classics need to be performed the way they were intended originally.

  • Jackie Meixner

Katherine McPhee ring a bell? pinks good, but wrong song.

  • Me

Why are you americans always so judgemental??? Pink is an amazing singer and performer, and she did really great! For once,- be proud of Pink!

  • Brice

Sorry, but she breathed right in the middle of so many words…very poor training indeed….not a worthy tribute for such a timeless song made famous by Judy – the legend.

  • celia

I agree with Brice. Her breath control was non existent and as a result her phrasing was choppy and emotionless. I love Pink, and I personally think she may have been ill. She has sung better hanging upside down than she did last night, and believe me that takes breath control.

  • AJ

What an embarrassment. She can’t sustain a note and has no clue where to breathe. Sad, unemotional and painful to watch….

  • Yeppers

Pink was amazing. One of my favorite moments of the night. And, obviously, I loved her version of Over the Rainbow. It’s a beautiful song, the lyrics are divine, and it’s a song that should be shared. Music isn’t stagnant, no version of anything is sacred, and Pink isn’t the first person to sing it since Judy Garland (whose version I also love), nor is she the first to take “liberties” with it. Anyway, I enjoyed it, and so did the Oscar watchers in my household. I’ll be keeping an eye on iTunes to see if it becomes available for purchase.

  • Jackie Meixner

@Nancy: nancy you are so correct. They shouldnt mess with such a perfect peice.Katherine McPhee had it nailed

  • babs

Pink does better singing ROCK – that being said- who else could have done that cover? – Miley? Katy? Bey? /i think not /maybe Christina A

  • babs

who else doth cover this song? Pink does Janis Joplin even better

  • Emily

It was horrible. Pink is no Judy Garland and, since no else that would ever get asked to the Oscars is, either, I think they should have played a recording of Ms. Garland singing the song correctly. I would have liked to see Liza, Lorna and Joey actually say something. I did like Ellen’s Glinda outfit, though.

  • Gina

I suggest you Google “Liza Minnellii sings “Over The Rainbow”. She has done it many times and the link below shows her singing it and destorying it. In particular check out aroung 4:20 mark. Pretty disrespectful I’d say.

  • We Luv Pink!

Pink stated that she was very nervous. Saw the performance and couldn’t even tell. She did a great job with what she was given and she should feel very proud of herself.

  • Natalie Rosen

Pink’s rendition of Over the Rainbow was SPECTACULAR. I loved every second of it and think perhaps it was the best ever done by a vocal artist. She was utterly amazing and beautiful to boot. I think Judy Garland if she were alive would be very very proud of her.

  • Natalie Rosen

    @Emily: Disagree with you entirely!

  • Disappointed

The video you link to is NOT Liza, but an impersonator. However, there is a video of Liza singing just the very ending of ‘over the rainbow’ at

Don’t know if she ever sang the complete song, I am sure impersonators have, but I haven’t found proof either Liza or Lorna have.

Pink did a phenomenal rendition! She has a allot of talent whether on the ground or in the air. It was a proud performance.

  • Albatross

@Disappointed: I thought Pink did a great job, watched Judy do the song from 38 and it was great also.

  • Linda

As a vocal coach, Pink was excellent. Her pitch was right on, she didn’t do a ton of vocal gymnastics like everyone else in the music industry. Judy Garland is really not a well trained singer; she held her own for the time, however, she cannot compete with Pink’s quality. You can hate what I believe to be true but I call it like I see it. I have never had anyone say hey, I want to sound like Judy Garland.

  • Disappointed

    Thank you for your response.

Linda, I think it is in poor taste to pass your opinion of Judy Garland’s God given talent to sing off as ‘fact’. To state that she ‘held her own’ is your opinion, to which you are entitled. However, to attempt to lessen her phenomenal success and achievements is disrespectful to Judy’s legacy as well as to her children. She was a legend in her day and attained a level of success that few ever achieve. Please, in stating your opinion, let’s not make light of what we certainly cannot deny; Judy Garland was a legend, an icon. You believe Pink is superior, and that is your opinion. Someday, If Pink attains the status that Judy is famous for, then maybe we all we take your opinion as truth. There are many singers in the world, but very few legends, let’s not rob Judy Garland of what she was.

  • sara

Judy is unforgettable…. this song is Judy Garland…. the Judy’s voice … no one like her….

  • Joseph de Nicola

Lovely, excellent. When will it be available?
