Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt in 'By the Sea' - First Stills Released!

Angelina Jolie sits on the edge of the bed in front of her husband Brad Pitt in this first still from their upcoming movie By the Sea, released by Entertainment Weekly.

Here is the official synopsis for the movie: “Set in France during the mid-1970s, Jolie plays Vanessa, a former dancer, and Pitt is her husband Roland, an American writer. As they travel the country together, they seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper (Niels Arestrup) and hotel owner (Richard Bohringer).”

“I chose to set By the Sea in the 1970s, not only because it is a colorful and alluring era, but because it removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey,” Angelina told EW in a statement.

David Fincher Explains What Killed ’20,000 Leagues’, Still Hopes for ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Sequel
    ==============================================================
    .
Posted on Monday, September 15th, 2014 by Angie Han
    .
This fall brings the release of Gone Girl, David Fincher‘s first theatrical release since 2011′s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. In between the two films, he was circling several others including the Dragon Tattoo follow-up The Girl Who Played with Fire and Disney’s Jules Verne adaptation 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
    .
The latter is definitely dead at this point, with Fincher even offering up an explanation as to where things went wrong. The director sounded a bit more optimistic about The Girl Who Played With Fire, however, predicting that Sony would do “something” with the project. Hit the jump to read his comments on 20000 Leagues and the Dragon Tattoosequel.
    .
Fincher first became attached to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in 2010, and over the next few years we watched with great interest as he began putting the pieces together. But Disney started waffling in 2012, and by 2013 the project was dead. Fincher left it behind and moved on to Gone Girl instead.
    .
At the time, we heard the big issue between Fincher and the studio came down to casting. Now Fincher has confirmed as much in an interview with Little White Lies (via Brad Pitt Online).
    .
You get over $200 million — all motion picture companies have corporate culture and corporate anxieties. Once we got past the list of people we could cast as the different characters in the film, once we got past one or two names which made them very comfortable, making a movie at that price, it became this bizarre endeavour to find which three names you could rub together to make platinum.
    .
    He further explained:
I wanted Aronnax to be French, God forbid! It got to be a little too confusing to me. I had this argument with a studio executive one time where he said to me, ‘why is it that the actors always side with you and we’re paying them?’ And I said, ‘I think it’s because at some level, they know that my only real allegiance is to the movie.’ And because that’s very clear and it never wavers, they may not agree with the image of the movie I have in my head, but they know that’s what I’m after. They’ve seen me for 100 days take the long way around.
    .
I think that when you’re trying to put together a handful of people to deliver all those facets of humanity and who work well together, it has to be in service of the narrative and not in service of the balance sheet. It became very hard to appease the anxieties of Disney’s corporate culture with the list of names that allowed everyone to sleep at night. I just wanted to make sure I had the skill-sets I could turn the movie over to. Not worrying about whether they’re big in Japan.
    .
Fincher didn’t offer specifics on which “big in Japan” actors the studio had in mind, but Brad Pitt and Channing Tatum were reportedly among the actors that he had considered for the lead.
Meanwhile, Fincher seemed slightly more optimistic about The Girl Who Played with Fire, which has a script by Steven Zaillian. Last we heard, Andrew Kevin Walker was working on rewrites.

    .
“I think because (Sony) already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script, it will result in something,” Fincherf told Swedish site Aftonbladet (translation by Film Divider). “The script that we now have has huge potential. I can reveal that it is extremely different from the book.”
    .
Of course, Sony had already sunk $90 million into the first film without getting the return they hoped for. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo made just $102 million domestically and another $132 million abroad. Not disastrous figures, but much lower ones than Sony had hoped for.
    .
At this point, the studio may figure they’re better off cutting their losses and moving on. Craig, Mara, and Fincher are all terribly busy and more in-demand than ever, and after three years the hype surrounding Steig Larsson‘s books seems to have dissipated.
    .
In the meantime, Fincher has plenty of opportunities in front of him. He’s working on a ’50s noir series and a Utopia remake for HBO, and he’s considered re-teaming with Rooney Mara for Red Sparrow.

Jolie meets Malta sinking boat survivors
    =====================================
    .
    Published — Tuesday 16 September 2014
    .
MALTA: UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and Special Envoy Angelina Jolie visited the naval rescue headquarters in Malta on Sunday, on a weekend in which new boat sinkings were being reported off Egypt and Libya claiming more innocent lives.
    .
Jolie and Guterres met three survivors of one of the tragedies, who had been rescued by a commercial vessel and brought to Malta by the Maltese authorities, a statement by the UNHCR said.
    .
In the Maltese capital Valletta, Jolie also visited Syrian refugee families who survived a similar devastating boat tragedy last October. They included a couple from Damascus whose three small children perished during the crossing, and a doctor from Aleppo whose wife and three year-old daughter drowned. Half of those arriving in Europe by boat are refugees from Syria and Eritrea.
    .
Guterres and Jolie thanked the naval authorities for their part in successful rescue operations that have saved many lives. Amidst concerns about the sustainability of the Italian Mare Nostrum operation, they also called for increased efforts by European nations to contribute to rescue efforts and reduce deaths at sea.
    .
Over 2,500 people have drowned or gone missing attempting the crossing this year alone, including over 2,200 since the start of June.
    .
Jolie said: “We all need to wake up to the scale of this crisis. There is a direct link between the conflicts in Syria and elsewhere and the rise in deaths at sea in the Mediterranean.

It looks like there are now two Angelina Jolie Oscar campaigns we have to think about. There’s her WWII survivor story “Unbroken” coming in December, but the actress/director/screenwriter is already at work on her next movie “By The Sea,” co-starring new husband Brad Pitt.
    .
And after only a week of shooting, the first images have arrived. And even more, there are some plot details as well. Here’s the synopsis via EW:

    .
So gorgeous people, in a gorgeous setting, gorgeously exploring their feelings? No confirmed release date yet, but it’s probably a safe bet “By The Sea” will arrive next year in time for awards consideration.

Fury: behind the scenes of ‘the ultimate tank movie’, starring Brad Pitt
    =================================================
    .
Exclusive: Director David Ayer introduces Into the Tiger’s Claw, a special preview of his Second World War tank thriller Fury, starring Brad Pitt
    .
By Jacob Stolworthy 6:40PM BST 15 Sep 2014
    .
    WARNING: Video contains strong language
Fury is the new Second World War drama from writer-director David Ayer (End of Watch) and this new preview – introduced by Ayer himself – provides a glimpse at what to expect from the film.
    .
The action-packed thriller follows Brad Pitt’s battle-hardened US army sergeant Wardaddy as he leads an American five man tank crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines in Germany, 1945.
    .
Pitt’s co-stars include Shia LaBeouf, Michael Peña, Logan Lerman, Jason Isaacs and former Walking Dead actor Jon Bernthal, all playing members of his tank unit.
    .
Ayer – who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning Training Day – says he set out to make “the ultimate tank movie”, helped by Dorset Tank Museum’s loan of the last working Tiger tank to the production. The tank was the first to be captured by the Allies, with Ayer deeming the Museum’s loan as a “special asset” to the authenticity of Fury.
    .
The Tank Museum’s David Willey says the museum “wanted to make sure [the tank] was going to be involved in a movie that did it justice.”
    .
As revealed in this exclusive featurette, the Tiger tank will be featured in a “critical sequence at the end of the film”.
    .
It was recently announced that Fury will close this year’s BFI London Film Festival with its European premiere on October 19. Both Pitt and Ayer will be in attendance, the director explaining that the London premiere will be “something of a homecoming” as shooting of the film took place in both Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire.
    .
Fury will be released in the UK on October 22. You can watch the trailerhere.

    .
Also, when I saw Brad’s distinctive 70s look on the yacht photos I KNEW BTS was gonna be set in the 70s. I didnt envision what Angie would look like but that still photo of her on EW is smoking!

    .

Not joking Felinelilly ,she actually HAS said that about her OWN mother, ironic isn’t it coming from a woman wearing a stand up to cancer for face time on TV doing fake boo hoo over people she barely knew, yet calls her own mother her cancer. What does that tell you about the person she is? No morals, no respect , god forbid her mother called her plain looking and till this say this 45year old woman going on 46b still holds a grudge against her sick , fragile old mother. To be honest if her father wasn’t famous shed be throwing him under the bus too like her mother.
    .
Chocolate chips Yum, fruits Yum, Syrup Yum, whipped cream Yum Yum , look what’s you’ve done made me all hungry, iv e got no control over it I know what I’m having later on lol.
    .
Felinelilly the photo of Angie in Black negligee and Brad on the bed, reminds me of her in The Tourist that room has the same vibe, by the way I loved that hotel room they showed in The Tourist, loved the decor.
    .
This movie is so frisking sizzling hot and that’s only from 3 photos. Felinelilly Meltdown alert, don’t forget to bolt those windows something tells me we will have Screaming in the Ocean tonight.

I love these kind of films. But it certainly will only appeal to a subset of film lovers. That’s fine with me.
    .
Obsession can mean a variety of things. It can be obsession about how someone else lives or loves or manages to survive a marriage. Being obsessed with other people or other couples can mean a host of things other than sexual obsession. You only have to look at the neurotic obsession of the trolls to see that.

  • Dawne

Sure it beats a cameo on Friends……………BWWWWWWWWWHAHAHA…………hey, hags…….the creative endeavour with his last wife?

Soo perfect. Raw emotional drama………my fave movie type. Perfect ten years and six kids later. I love European movies……they are like British comedy………..the benchmark for real acting. I used to love the International section of the old video stores.

Being in the seventies timeline allows the ‘haters biographical theorizing’ to a minimum. Angie is so smart.

So George surreptitiously campaigned for an honour on Angie’s level………..nothing about that guy screams humanitarian to me; self promotion, yup, but that’s about it. He and Ticky were the best match ever………fameho extraordinaires who llterally lust after fame with such gusto……..their lfe blood. IMO Brad has done far more with MIR and the JP Foundation. This marriage and award are supposed to take him to the Brange level………….good luck with that, Porgster.

LOL! Please. Any film released in 2015 “will arrive in time for awards consideration.” I doubt very much that is in their minds. This is the kind of exercise – writing, directing, acting – that artists enjoy doing if they have the resources to do them. It’s fun and challenging rather than wasting all your time on trying to make money.
    .
Happy to hear Patricia Rommel is editing. She not only edited The Lives of others (brilliant), she also edited The Tourist, In The Land of Blood and Honey and The Last Station. People who work with Brad and/or Angie repeat those experiences time and again.
