Director Sam Taylor-Johnson Not Returning For 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Sequel 'Fifty Shades Darker'

Sam Taylor-Johnson will not be directing the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel, titled Fifty Shades Darker.

Reports from Variety and other sources suggest that the 48-year-old director wanted to distance herself from the franchise. There have been rumors that Sam and writer E.L. James got in numerous fights over the direction of the film during filming.

Screenwriter Kelly Marcel will also not be returning, and some say that E.L. would like to adapt the script herself.

Shooting on the film, which will see the return of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, is expected to begin next year.

Oh dear lord…If E.L James gets control of the script……
At least Sam Taylor-Johnson brought a bit of humour and quirk to the first movie.

Thank god! hopefully the script for next sequel will be much much better than the first one or at least as good as the book :)

EL James has been on my shitlist for a long time, I can only imagine how she drove away the only good thing to happen for this franchise. Smh.

  • VanityInsecurity

Crappy books & even crapper film no matter who directs or writes.

  • dalovelee

This is typical move in Hollywood the female director does a money job and then for the following sequels the franchise is handed over to a male director. That’s what happened with a Twilight. The studio knows that the follow up movies will make money so they don’t need to make a better script or find a better director.

  • Heidi

Female directors rarely get the credit they deserve, and it’s beyond frustrating.

  • Tanya

Too bad. She turned that schlock written by EL James into something palatable. Good luck to her. She has 500 million reasons to be proud of her work.

I am bummed about Taylor-Johnson. Seems like the production of the sequel is a mess! I wish they would have locked everyone in for the sequels before releasing the first. Just get on with it! With the ending of the first movie, fans don’t want to wait until 2018 for the sequel.

Sam was what stopped that film being truly awful. She elevated it. EL James has sht herself in the foot, driving Sam away.

    Shitty book, shittier movie.

  • Tina Mallette

This is what happens when massive sales of a crappy series of books makes someone think they are a good writer and it all goes to their head. It was going to be a monumental challenge for anyone to adapt that book and Kelly Marcel is an award nominated screenwriter who wrote the screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks. She too was very brave to even take the challenge on,

  • Jake93

as long as Jamie Dorman is naked & pretending having sex on screen.the FSOG horny fans dont give a shit about the director & script

What is “50 Shades of Grey”.

  • Nikki Tomas

At least someone is smart to leave. Smart would have been not to do it in the first place.

  • Lilly

I liked Sam but they need a deeper director for FSOG darker, the second book has more in depth of his past and brings out why he’s the way he is with the right director the second one can actually be a good movie. Maybe Tarantino can be bribed with lots of money to do this .

  • Lilly

Amen to that , the movie didn’t make over 500 million because it’s oscar worthy lol

  • Lostindenver

Absolutely! Good luck with that EL James! If she writes the script they need to pay Dakota and Jamie whatever the hell they want as they may be the only thing that will get people to pay to watch the movie. FSD has so much content, we won’t see the sequel until 2020. By then no one will remember the books. Anyone who thinks they could write the script…go for it! PLEASE!
