UN special envoy Angelina Jolie makes first visit to Myanmar
    July 29, 2015
President U Thein Sein welcomes United Nations’ goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie – (beautiful photo – looks like she is being presented with a gift)
United Nations’ goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie began an official visit Wednesday to Myanmar, meeting President U Thein Sein at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, they discussed human rights, women’s affairs and the prevention of sexual violence against women in conflicts.
The president and the Oscar-winning actress also spoke about measures to improve children’s access to education. According to a press release issued by the British Embassy in Yangon, Ms Jolie is visiting Myanmar for four days “to learn more about the situation in the country and encourage efforts to build a peaceful and inclusive future for all its people.”
Ms Jolie was quoted in the press release as saying she would meet many groups of people in Myanmar “to learn firsthand from them about their concerns and hopes for the future of their country.”
“With elections on the horizon in November it is an important moment for people to exercise their democratic rights and help to address the fundamental issues critical to a peaceful future,” she said.
During her first visit to Myanmar, Ms Jolie also held talks with Thura U Shwe Mann, the Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw, on the role of Myanmar parliament in implementing tasks of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
She also met with Union Minister for Defence Lt-Gen Wai Lwin and discussed prevention of sexual violence and recruitment of minors as soldiers.
Ms Jolie is said to be planning visits to refugee camps in Sittwe, Rakhine State, on Thursday, and camps of internally displaced people in Myitkyina, Kachin State, on Friday.
She will meet with non-governmental organizations in Yangon on Friday afternoon.
Ms Jolie arrived in Myanmar from Cambodia, where she inspected health, education and conservation projects funded by the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation since 2003, and beginning preparations to direct the film First They Killed My Father, based on a child’s experience of the years of turmoil in Cambodia.
Last year, Ms Jolie visited Karenni refugees at a Thai-Myanmar border camp in Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province as a special envoy for the UNHCR.

Jolie’s Plans to Visit Arakan State Dampened by Cyclone
RANGOON — Hollywood film star Angelina Jolie Pitt has postponed a visit to western Burma’s Arakan State due to a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, according to the UN refugee agency for which she serves as special envoy.

A spokeswoman for the agency told The Irrawaddy that the actress, who arrived in Burma on Wednesday in her capacity as a UN ambassador and proponent of a UK anti-sexual violence initiative, will wait out the weather in the capital city Naypyidaw.

“[Jolie] would like to go to Rakhine [Arakan] State as she had scheduled, but the weather has gotten worse,” the spokeswoman said. “She will wait and see what the weather will be like this afternoon.”

The Academy Award winning actress and renowned philanthropist initially planned to visit camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Arakan State on Thursday, then travel to Kachin State on July 31.

Plans were derailed, however, as Cyclone Komen brought thrashing winds and heavy rain to the already troubled coastal state, which is one of the poorest parts of the country and has seen several bouts of deadly inter-communal riots over the past three years.

Over 100,000 people displaced by the violence are still living in squalid displacement camps where they are denied freedom of mobility and receive limited aid. Most of the displaced were stateless Rohingya Muslims, while Arakanese Buddhists were also affected and many still live in remote and low-lying villages.

Hla Thein, head of the state’s Information Department, told The Irrawaddy on Thursday that air traffic in and out of the capital Sittwe had been stopped as of Wednesday afternoon due to extreme weather conditions. He could not comment on the extent of damage thus far caused by the storm.

Rohingya rights activist Wai Wai Nu, who was scheduled to meet with Jolie, expressed disappointment that the envoy would not be able to visit some of the more remote parts of the state, such as Maungdaw and Buthidaung, where many IDPs live in impoverished camps and visits by outsiders are infrequent.

“Especially now, people in those camps in northern Rakhine have been suffering a lot due to the flooding,” Wai Wai Nu said. “I want to let her see those camps, too.”

Jolie was appointed as a UN special envoy for refugee issues in 2012, after 10 years of experience as a goodwill ambassador for the agency. She has been a close observer of the situation in Burma roughly since her initial visit to refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border in 2002.

This week’s visit was jointly organized by the UNHCR and the British Embassy in Rangoon on the invitation of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Burma’s democracy icon chairwoman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) first met Jolie during the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London last year.

“I am looking forward to meeting with many people including women’s groups, civil society, displaced people and youth, to learn firsthand from them about their concerns and hopes for the future of their country,” Jolie said of the visit in a statement this week.

“With elections on the horizon in November it is an important moment for people to exercise their democratic rights and help to address the fundamental issues critical to a peaceful future.”

Rohingya Muslims welcome Angelina Jolie ‘s visit to Myanmar
Lahore: Rohingya Muslims have welcomed the visit of renowned Hollywood celebrity and U.N. Refugee Agency’s Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie, who arrived in Myanmar for four-day visit to understand the country’s situation, hoping that the visit would have positive impacts to end the ongoing humanitarian crises there.

In a welcoming statement issued jointly, the Director General of Arakan Rohingya Union, Dr. Wakar Uddin, and President of Global Rohingya Center, Shiekh Abdullah Maruf, have requested the human rights activist to also include the visit of Muslim area, Arakan (Rakhine), in her agenda.

They also termed the recent statement of Angelina Jolie very encouraging, in which she had showed interest to interact with the people belonging to different walks of life, to learn firsthand from them about their concerns and hopes for the future of Myanmar, related to upcoming national elections in November.

“At the critical time when the Green Card offer was completely rejected by the Rohingya Muslims, her visit is being considered as of vital importance,” they said in their statement. Mentioning the plights of IDPs Camps, and the Boat Crises, both Rohingya leaders were of the view that the Rohingya Muslims have been living in Arakan since many centuries, and the Green Card Scheme, having validity of 2 years, would resulted to expel them from Myanmar by declaring as “illegal migrants of Bangali Origin”.

The root cause of all problems and complexities, being faced by the Rohingya Muslims, is denial of the citizenship rights, they said, while appealing to Angelina Jolie to play her active role by asking the Myanmar Government to ensure that the Rohingya Muslims must have equal access to Burmese citizenship.

Mysterious Tourists: When Angelina Jolie Visited Kenya
    Angelina Jolie with Fred
Early in October 2002, accompanied by two men and a woman, and donning a self-effacing black pants and red rubber sandals, white vest and a scarf, Angelina Jolie ambled into the City Market in Nairobi. You could hardly tell who she was. Not even the burly blond bodyguard, close by her side, gave her away. They appeared like colleagues engaged in conversation. Another gentleman and lady followed closely behind.

I had watched Tomb Raider but I still did not realise who she was when she came to Shop 11 on the balcony where I worked. Her easy disposition and kindness concealed her celebrity status totally. Yet, my gut feeling told that this was someone prominent I had seen or read about somewhere.

“How are you today?” I broke the ice. “Fine, thanks” she answered as she lost the bodyguard and stopped. “More stuff inside, take a look,” I continued, as is customary with salespeople in the market.

Before she went into the shop, she picked up some ebony spoons, forks and bottle openers from a tray on a table at the entrance. “How much is one?” she asked, looking me straight in the eye.

Careful to not self-destruct or disappoint, I uttered a price that was just above modest so that the lady would buy and the day would be made for me. “But choose the ones you want, then I will give you a better price, the more you buy the lower the price,” I added.

She smiled, picked up several of them and placed them on the table. Normally a tourist would ask for a discount but she did not, asking the lady accompanying her, who carried a purse, to pay me.

I said “thank you and have a nice day” as she walked out of the shop and she replied “you too!” as she proceeded to Mzee Muli’s shop number 10. Wherever she went in the market, she never bargained much but made sure everyone was left happy.

Minutes later, a tour guide approached and asked for his ‘cut’, a common practice. I told him that I gave her a low price because I did not want her to decline to buy as normally happens whenever a tourist is given exorbitant prices.

“Do you know who that is?” he asked.

    “I can’t quite place her,” I retorted.

“That is Angelina Jolie,” he declared. My heart sunk and my legs buckled.

I called my friend Fred in shop number 12 . He ran up to her at the ground floor and cheekily sought to confirm “Actress?” She gracefully offered him a photo opportunity which was all he asked for.

As a young salesman, I could only be disappointed. There are different prices for different people and I could have made a “kill”. Most importantly, information is power — there were many ideas we could have discussed with her, if only we could have been known that it was her.

Word is that she has personally written to Kenya’s Tourism Cabinet Secretary offering support. The CS has a great opportunity with her. How much would it benefit Kenya to have Angelina as our tourism ambassador? That could be a big step forward for Kenya’s tourism. Unlike Fred and me, Kenya should not miss the opportunity.

I keep thinking this man stalked the lion after he mortally wounded it. And after a callous execution, he then had the inhumane soulless indecency to skin and behead Cecil. Where is the body? Does he still have it? Palmer should be tried and sentenced to some dark dingy prison in Zimbabwe.
