Mariah Carey's Rep Sets Record Straight on New Year's Eve Performance

Mariah Carey‘s manager Stella Bulochnikov has given an extensive interview disclosing what really went down on New Year’s Eve, and blasting the producers of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest for wanting a “viral moment at any expense.”

Mariah did a sound check, contrary to reports, Stella said (you can see photos of Mariah at sound check in the gallery below). “Not only did she not ditch rehearsal, we got to Times Square at 2:30. They weren’t ready for her until 3:20. We waited around for their stage manager. We had the stage from 3:20 to 3:50. She had a dance stand-in for the musical number. She sat on the side of the stage with her ear-pack and her in-ears and her microphone to make sure she could do the sound check. The most important thing to her was the sound. The sound was coming in choppy. She was assured it would work by the evening,” she told EW.

On what happened just before going on stage: We told both stage managers ” remember this is not our production team, we’re out-sourcing our team which we never do – we told them the mic pack is not working. She can’t hear it, it’s faint. They brought her a new one, and that one didn’t work either, the mic pack was dead. They changed the battery pack. She said she still couldn’t hear. The second stage manager said, “It doesn’t work here in the tent, it will work on the stage.” She said, “Great, let’s go to the stage.” It’s now four minutes to showtime. She says, “I hear nothing in my ears, my ears are dead.” The other stage manager says, “It will work right when we go live.” Then things start to get chaotic. They start counting her down ” four minutes, three minutes. Mariah: “I can’t hear.” Them: “You’re gonna hear when it goes live ” two minutes!” So, right when it goes live, she can’t hear anything. The ears are dead. They’re dead. So she pulls them out of the ear because if the artist keeps them in their ears then all she hears is silence. Once she pulled them off her ear she was hoping to hear her music, but because of the circumstances ” there’s noise from Times Square and the music is reverberating from the buildings ” all she hears is chaos. She can’t hear her music. It’s a madhouse. At the point, there’s no way to recover.

On what happened after the show: She should have walked off and thrown the mic at somebody’s head ” that would have been a great moment. After the show, I called Mark Shimmel ” who begged her to do the show and had her cut her vacation short from Aspen. This is a verbatim conversation. I asked, “What happened?” He said, “I just talked to my guys and I confirmed her in-ears didn’t work. Couldn’t she just wing it?” I’m like, “What are you talking about ‘winging it’? Are you on glue?” He’s like, “What do you want me to do?” I said, “I want you to cut the West Coast feed.” He calls me back and says, “We can’t do it.” So I’m like, “You would prefer to air a show with technical glitches so you can have a viral moment rather than protect the integrity of your show and Dick Clark Productions?” He said, “We just won’t do it. Do you want to do a joint statement?” And I said, “No, I want you to go f” yourself.”

On why producers didn’t cut to commercial: But even when it didn’t work [when live], when she pulled her ears out, they should have cut to commercial. That says to me they wanted a viral moment at any expense. And that’s not a company with integrity for 50-something years. That’s not who Dick Clark was. He loved artists.

After watching Mariah’s reality show the first thing I would do is fire this manager. She’s horrible. Mariah needs someone used to managing diva’s like Scooter Braun.

  • SaraJ

Wow… good for her manager for making this clear. They did her dirty. Let’s see who does NYE next year – bet it will be nobody as big as Mariah because they know better now.

  • Cruizin1960

Diva behavior. She has been in this business a long time and I am sure that this is not the first time she has experienced sound problems. A true pro (not a diva) goes on with the show…shrugs their shoulders and says “sh*t happens”. She should have told them to cut the music and either sung without it or had the audience sing with her. She ended up looking like a diva and extremely unprofessional. Typical Mariah.

The secret is, Mariah’s voice is shot. Nothing was stopping her from singing live, she started to sing live several times and the little bit I heard actually coming out of her mouth was horrible, she knew it, and she stopped. The rest f the vocals were lipped.

“She should have walked off and thrown the mic at somebody’s head — that would have been a great moment.” Are you fucking kidding me ?
A billionaire diva should use violence against a poor minimum wage working person, working on new year’s eve, who did nothing wrong himself ?
This “setting the record straight” is full of shit. MC should fire her… She’s making the whole thing even worst. No class, no shame, no dignity, no respect…

  • SquidBillie

I’m not a fan, but this is getting drawn out way too long, it was at the top of the national news yesterday. Get over it, people.

  • Mayra

You took the words right out of my mouth. She and her team just can’t understand it wasn’t the technical “fail” that made this disastrous, it’s the fact that she isn’t professional enough to improv and move on, which, as you said, only confirms once again her diva attitude. If she really wants to get anywhere after this, all she needs to do is to finally get her head out of her ass, and offers will rain.

  • Rosemary Mascarelli

she should have just had audience sing along and there would have been no problem…

OK, Mariah is on my list of altime great singers and a phenomenal musical talent. To her team: This is an opportunity for a comeback. Whether it be on one of the award shows or at an extra extra spectacular Vegas show. I’m sorry but I do blame the out sourcing of the production team, weather, etc. She will make a comeback.

Horseshit. I’ve been working in the television and entertainment business for 29 years now. I’ve worked with my share of divas, but not Mariah so I’ll reserve comment on her tier of diva-ness. Cut to commercial? Cut the west coast feed? Any Executive Producer would have told him to go screw himself about dictating my show. If her in-ears weren’t working she sure was trying to grab them repeatedly during the performance.

The tell-all is the “it doesn’t work here but it’ll work onstage” excuse. Pure bunk. No tech, not even an intern, would say something that stupid. If it works, it works, if not, get one that does. Until then, the show is NOT ready. We can fill a time hole if needed, we can shorten up things if needed. If an editor of mine said “It’ll be ready”, to me that means “It’s out of the show until I see it ready for air”. NO exceptions.

The manager is doing his job which is defending his meal ticket. If you’re a member of the right groups, there is quite a bit of inside information which contradicts this asshat.

  • Bad Apple

The show has been ass since DC died. Put McCarthy out to pasture already, send Pitbull packing (glad he was gone). Send all the lame acts but ESPECIALLY get rid of the divas like MC. They need to go back to basics instead of big names and overblown product placement.

Oh, and MC had no trouble “singing” the first song. Only after the disappearing act did she reappear with her in-ears dangling and attempted to find them several times when they were stuck in her hair.

Don’t go blaming the techs. We know better and don’t take any shit when we get blamed for what the talent, or their people, did and try to blame the technical staff. I swear to God there are some negotiations going on as to who will finally be named as the one who messed up. Can’t let MC look bad. Can’t let ABC/DC Productions look bad. It’ll all come down to something faceless and defenseless like “(insert equipment here) shorted in the rain” or some other BS. In the end, MC will come off as innocent when everyone backstage will know better. The sad part is that nobody cares for the truth if it makes the talent look bad in the end. If you’re part of the right Facebook groups, the truth is out there and it points DIRECTLY to MC’s people and herself. What’s sad is that if I name names their jobs are as good as toast. It will all fade in time and nobody will care.

  • SaraJ

I think she had lots of trouble with the first song, if you watched her closely. They kept cutting away to the audience fora reason.
Mariah wouldn’t have embarrassed herself like that on purpose. She couldn’t hear and it was obvious.
