New Coke From 1985 Makes Comeback With 'Stranger Things' Season 3

New Coke is back after 34 years, and fans can thank Stranger Things season three.

The recipe from 1985 is making a comeback in honor of the new season, complete with the old can design, Coca-Cola announced on Tuesday (May 21).

The third season of Stranger Things premieres on July 4 and will take place in 1985. That year, Coca-Cola made soda drinkers angry with the launch of a new recipe. It was pulled from shelves just 79 days later, and the old recipe returned.

The soda goes on sale at cokestore.com at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday. Free cans of New Coke will also be available for a limited time from an upside-down Stranger Things-inspired vending machine in select cities, starting in New York.

“When Netflix told us Season 3 was going to be set in the summer of 1985 – with the tagline that ‘one summer could change everything’ – that rang so true for us,” said Oana Vlad, director of Coca-Cola Trademark, Coca-Cola North America. “The summer of 1985 did in fact change everything for us with the introduction of New Coke, which was also arguably one of the biggest pop culture moments of that year.”

Coca-Cola has had numerous cameos in the first two seasons of Stranger Things as well.
