Boston Celtics NBA Star Enes Kanter Calls Out Nike; Wears 'Modern Day Slave' Shoes During Game

Enes Kanter is calling out Nike.

The Boston Celtics basketball star put the brand on blast for not fighting against injustice in China, where many of their products – including shoes for NBA teams – are made.

Enes has been very outspoken about the treatment of minorities in China, and upped his protest during a few recent games, including one just last week, and another on earlier this week in the game against the Charlotte Hornets.

His shoes caught attention and on the sides of them, “Modern Day Slavery” and “No More Excuses”, were written on them.

“Nike remains vocal about injustice here in America, but when it comes to China, Nike remains silent,” Enes shared to his Twitter about the protest, adding hashtags #HypocriteNike and #EndUyghurForcedLabor. “You do not address police brutality in China, you do not speak about discrimination against the LGBTQ community, you do not say a word about the oppression of minorities in China, you are scared to speak up.”

He has also highlighted the injustice felt by the Uyghur community, which the US State Department estimates that up to 2 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities have been detained in internment camps in Xinjiang since 2017.

Enes added, “Who makes your shoes in China? Do you even know?…There are so many forced labor factories in China. For instance, Uyghur forced labor, it is modern day slavery, and it is happening right now in China.”

He’s also called on others, namely LeBron James and Michael Jordan, to join him in the fight.
