HGTV's Hilary Farr Reveals Secret Battle With Breast Cancer

Hilary Farr is opening up about a scary point in her life.

The HGTV personality and interior designer shared in a new interview that she had battled breast cancer in the early 2010s.

Hilary spoke to People and Entertainment Weekly about her cancer, which was diagnosed after a routine mammogram in 2012.

After undergoing surgery the first time, it was determined to be a precancerous tumor. However, it then turned into something more. Two years later, after another mammogram, it was revealed she had invasive breast cancer, which had spread into surrounding breast tissue; and another lumpectomy happened.

“I was signed off by the medical oncologist saying, ‘You’re done. You’re fine. Off you go,’” Hilary shared, before adding that it didn’t end there.

Hilary said that she was surprised to learn she was supposed to get radiation as a part of her course of treatment but was incorrectly told by the medical oncologist it was not necessary.

“I was terrified, because I knew I had a very small window,” she says. “I felt absolute fury that someone could be so flippantly wrong. I could have been dead.”

After undergoing the radiation in 2015, months later, Hilary underwent a third lumpectomy, and the tumor was considered precancerous.

Today, she is now in remission from her cancer.

Hilary is in hopes that her own cancer battle and story will help and encourage others to go get checked.

“Fear of breast cancer stops a lot of women from getting checked. But as terrifying as it is, you face it,” she shared. “Thinking that you should keep it a secret or just power through doesn’t help and it doesn’t heal. If I can change that for one person, then that’s enough.”

Hilary is about to launch her brand new series on HGTV, called Tough Love with Hilary Farr.

The show focuses on Hilary as she uses her invaluable design expertise and life experience to help families facing unique life challenges that strain their homes and their relationships.

The series will premiere Monday, December 20, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV.
