Elizabeth Olsen Reflects On Playing the Villain In 'Multiverse of Madness' & Her Role In the MCU
Elizabeth told Variety that she was a little surprised by her opportunity to play a villain.
“Well, this is quite a leap from the woman that I’ve been playing,” she reflected.
However, it wasn’t a bad change, necessarily. “At least in my experience, it’s been hard as a woman to express rage,” Elizabeth said. “It’s one of the most amazing feelings, because it’s so specific: You can know exactly why you’re angry.”
She added that she found out about her villain status during a meeting with director Sam Raimi, Kevin Feige and screenwriter Michael Waldron. ““I called my team, and I was like, ‘You guys, I’m the lead villain in this film. I didn’t know that’s what we were doing, but that’s what’s happening,’” she explained.
Elizabeth also expressed her shock at appearing in six movies as Wanda: “That’s, like, half of the job credits I have! That’s why I don’t have as many credits — because they’re long jobs.”
She was tight-lipped about her future in the franchise and deferred to Kevin for making the ultimate reveal. “It’s good for me to know how he communicates about it,” she said. “Because I really, genuinely feel like my job is to keep my mouth shut until he makes an announcement of any kind.”
He expressed interest in working with Elizabeth “for another 100 years if we could.” Although her future was left on rocky ground in Multiverse of Madness, Kevin made it clear that anything was possible.
“I don’t know that we saw her under rubble,” he asked about Wanda’s presumed death. “I saw a tower coming down, and a little red flash. I don’t know what that means.”
“Anything’s possible in the multiverse! We’ll have to see,” Kevin added. He also pointed out that there are still plenty of stories to tell if the opportunity arises.
Elizabeth was one of several women profiled for Variety‘s Power of Women edition.
In case you missed it, Kevin recently spoke out about Marvel’s decision not to recast Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Here’s what he had to say.
