While speaking Diane Sawyer‘s for ABC’s The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later, Hugh revealed that he really did not want to film his character’s now iconic dance scene.

In Love Actually, there is a scene where Hugh‘s character David, aka the Prime Minister, dances around his house at 10 Downing Street while The Pointer Sisters‘ song “Jump” plays in the background.

“I saw it in the script and I thought, ‘Well, I’ll hate doing that,’” Hugh recalled in the special. “I didn’t fancy doing the dance at all, let alone rehearsing it.”

“He kept saying no,” writer and director Richard Curtis joked. “I think he was hoping I’d get ill or something and we’d say, ‘Oh, well, what a shame, we’ll have to lose that dancing sequence.’”

Richard went on to say that Hugh was “grumpy” the day they filmed the dance scene, but “it was a contractual obligation” that he follow through.

“A contractual guillotine, yes,” Hugh said, agreeing with the phrase Diane threw out. “And I’m out of rhythm, by the way, especially at the beginning when I wiggle my ass.”

Richard added that he was ecstatic with how Hugh really committed to the scene, joking, “[I thought], ‘That’s agonizingly embarrassing. He’s just perfect.’”

Hugh later said that he came up with the idea of having the Prime Minister’s secretary catch him dancing around.

“And to this day, there’s many people — and I agree with them — who think it’s the most excruciating scene ever committed to celluloid,” Hugh joked. “But then some people like it.”

The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later – A Diane Sawyer Special airs on Tuesday night (November 29) at 8 pm ET on ABC, and will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day. Find out which other cast members will be participating!
