Salma Hayek Gets Candid About Being Typecast & Reveals The One Co-Star Who Helped Her Get Into Comedies

Salma Hayek Pinault is opening up about how she was typecast for years before one of her co-stars stepped in.

In an interview with British GQ, the 56-year-old Magic Mike’s Last Dance actress revealed that she’s consistently offered “sexy” roles over other ones, and shared that it wasn’t until she was 40 that she was offered a comedic part.

Salma revealed that it was Adam Sandler, whom she co-starred with in Grown Ups, that gave her a role that wasn’t just the “sexy” part.

“I was typecast for a long time,” she shared. “My entire life I wanted to do comedy and people wouldn’t give me comedies.”

Salma added that she was “in my 40s” when the part came for her.

Previously she had been told that “‘You’re sexy, so you’re not allowed to have a sense of humor.’ Not only are you not allowed to be smart, but you were not allowed to be funny in the ’90s.”

Salma then admitted while she “was sad at the time, but now here I am doing every genre, in a time in my life where they told me I would have expired – that the last 20 years I would have been out of business.”

She also reflected on her role as Frida Kahlo in the 2002 biopic Frida, and hoped that would change things around for her.

However, it didn’t: “When I was nominated for an Oscar, the types of roles that people offered me did not change at all. I really struggled and I thought that was going to change, but no.”

Just recently, Salma opened up about why she uses her full married name in projects now.
