Lizzo Was Told To Cancel Her Tennessee Concerts After State's Anti-Drag Ban

Lizzo didn’t do it, but she was advised to cancel her performances in Tennessee over the weekend.

The 34-year-old performer and singer shared her story on stage during her concert in Knoxville on Friday (April 21), where she brought out a handful of drag performers on stage with her.

Lizzo explained to the packed crowd that she was told to cancel all of her Tennessee concerts because of the state’s anti-drag legislation.

The law, which was just instituted, bans “adult cabaret entertainment” in public spaces and where it might be seen by minors.

“In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,’” Lizzo said on stage. We don’t have to go there…Their reasons were valid.

But despite the suggestion, Lizzo didn’t listen and insisted on creating her concert as a safe space for just that.

“Why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most, the people who need to feel this release the most? Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences? And celebrate fat Black women?”

She concluded, “What people are doing in Tennessee is giving hope. So thank you so much for standing up for your rights, protecting each other, and holding the people accountable who should be protecting us.”

Lizzo also shared a group photo with all the drag performers who participated.
