Shia LaBeouf starred alongside Harrison Ford in the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but he’s not back for the fifth installment of the popular franchise.

What happened to his character Mutt Williams?

Indiana discovered in the fourth movie that Mutt is his son who was kept from him by former love Marion Ravenwood. They formed a great relationship by the end of that movie, so it’s probably surprising to fans that he’s not back in the new movie.

We learned back in 2017 that Shia would not return for the new movie and it likely had to do with his arrest that happened that year. Back in July 2017, he was arrested in Savannah, Georgia for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and obstruction. He was eventually found guilty of obstruction, but not guilty of public intoxication. He was sentenced to one year of probation, a $1,000 fine, and ordered to seek therapy.

So, what happened to Shia‘s character?

We learn that Mutt went off to war – but sadly he was killed during the war, which causes Marion and Indy to separate. Indiana sharing about his death is one of the most poignant parts of the film.

Indiana is asked at one point what he’d do with the power to time travel. He said, “I’d stop my son from enlisting… He signed up to piss me off.”
