Kenneth Branagh Didn't Tell Any Stars of 'A Haunting In Venice' About The Jump Scares While Filming

Kenneth Branagh is opening up about his upcoming movie, A Haunting In Venice, and revealed that he wanted to keep the movie as scary as possible – even for the cast.

The 62-year-old director of the movie, who also stars as detective Hercule Poirot, admitted in a new featurette that none of the stars – Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jude Hill, Kelly Reilly, Emma Laird, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Ali Khan and Riccardo Scamarico – had no idea about the jump scares.

“These actors had no warning about what would happen, what we did with lights, wind, doors opening,” Kenneth shared in the clip, first shared by Entertainment Weekly.

He also spoke highly of author Agatha Christie, who he calls “an incredible storyteller. She is the world’s number one mystery writer because she understood a good detective story. ‘Orient Express’ dealt with revenge. ‘Death on the Nile’ dealt with greed. This film is about whether there is anything beyond us, a ghost, a god, whether [my character detective Hercule] Poirot believes in it, that involves him and us being scared.”

A Haunting in Venice is set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows’ Eve. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world’s most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

The movie will be out on September 15.
