Judge Sets 2024 Date for Trump's 2020 Election Overturn Trial

A federal judge has set a date for former President Donald Trump‘s trial.

Judge Tanya Chutkan set March 4, 2024 as the date for the start of former president’s trial on charges related to his efforts to retain power in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, via Deadline.

The date was announced at a Monday hearing (August 28). Afterward, Trump’s lead attorney, John Lauro, told her that they would not be able to give Trump “adequate representation” given the time frame and that it was “inconsistent with the right to due process.”

The judge countered that Trump has represented by “zealous, experienced attorneys” and that prosecutors had gone further than they would in other case to provide access to discovery materials.

She also pointed out that the former president has been aware of the grand jury investigation since September of last year.

Prosecutors proposed January 2 for the start of the trial, while Trump’s legal team wanted it put off until April 2026.
