Shakira Charged With Failing to Pay Tax on Her 2018 Income

Shakira has been charged.

Spanish prosecutors have charged the 46-year-old “Whenever, Wherever” superstar with failing to pay 6.7 million euros ($7.1 million) in taxes on her 2018 income, authorities said Tuesday (September 26), in Spain’s latest allegations against the star, via AP.

She is being accused of using an offshore company based in a tax haven to avoid paying the tax, Barcelona prosecutors said.

She has been notified of the charges in Miami, where she now lives, according to the statement.

Shakira is already due to be tried in Barcelona on November 20 in a separate case centered around where she lived between 2012 and 2014. In that case, prosecutors claim she failed to pay 14.5 million euros ($15.4 million) in taxes.

Spanish prosecutors say she lived in Spain for more than half of each of the years she should have filed taxes.

Spain’s tax authorities have previously gone after stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for not paying their full due in taxes. They were found guilty of tax evasion, but avoided prison time thanks to a provision that allows a judge to waive sentences under two years in length for first-time offenders.
