Kevin McCarthy Makes History as First Speaker of the House to Be Removed From Position

Kevin McCarthy just made history on the floor of the United States House of Representatives.

The 58-year-old representative from California was removed from his position as Speaker of the House on Tuesday (October 3) after members of his own party turned their backs on him.

This marks the first time that a Speaker has ever been ousted from the role.

Kevin was ousted from the position after working with House Democrats to avoid a government shutdown last week. By doing so, he angered some conservative Republicans, including Matt Gaetz.

According to Forbes, Matt brought about the articles to remove Kevin from the position of Speaker. Seven other Republicans in the House agreed with him.

Despite working with Kevin to avoid a shutdown, Democrats opted out of supporting the politician and largely voted for him to be removed from office. They effectively sealed his fate. The final vote was 210 to 216, with the majority supporting him stepping down.

The party cited “unprecedented dysfunction” and “extremism” under Kevin‘s leadership as the reason that they opted out of helping to save him politically.

House Republicans will now need to rally behind another member of the House to elevate to the position. It took Kevin 15 votes in January of this year before the political party rallied behind him.
