Geraldo Rivera Apologizes to Bette Midler, Says He Remembers Things Differently

Geraldo Rivera is speaking out to apologize to Bette Midler, who accused the reporter of groping her in a bathroom back in the 1970s.

The 74-year-old host says that he remembers the events differently than Bette.

“27 years ago I wrote a tawdry book depicting consensual events in 1973-45 years ago-I’ve deeply regretted its distasteful & disrespectful tone & have refrained from speaking about it-I’m embarrassed & profoundly sorry to those mentioned-I have & again apologize to anyone offended,” Geraldo tweeted on Friday morning (December 1).

“Although I recall the time @BetteMidler has alluded to much differently than she, that does not change the fact that she has a right to speak out & demand an apology from me, for in the very least, publically [sic] embarrassing her all those years ago. Bette, I apologize,” he added.

Bette has not yet responded to the tweet.

Bette Midler Accused Geraldo Rivera of Groping Her in Newly Resurfaced Interview

Bette Midler made an allegation against Geraldo Rivera back in 1991 that has only just resurfaced in the wake of a series of sexual harassment allegations over the past few months.

During an interview with Barbra Walters, Bette explained that Geraldo was “unseemly.”

Geraldo and his producer came to do an interview with me, in the ’70s, the early ’70s. And this was when he was very, sort of, hot. And he and his producer left the crew in the other room, they pushed me into my bathroom, they broke two poppers and pushed them under my nose and proceeded to grope me.”

“I did not offer myself up on the altar of Geraldo Rivera. He was… he was unseemly,” she continued.

Geraldo wrote about the experience in his 19991 memoir Exposing Myself: “We were in the bathroom, preparing for the interview, and at some point I put my hands on her breasts,” he wrote.

The Fox News personality went live on the air after finding out that his daughter made it out safely and later had her call in to give her first-hand account.

“Before halftime, we all heard a very loud kind of explosion sound but no one seems to make any, like seem worried about it or anything except for the fellow New Yorkers by my side but we just brushed it off as nothing,” Simone said. “And then at halftime, we went to get food and…they wouldn’t let anyone leave the stadium at that point and they weren’t telling us anything and they just had a bunch of ambulances and people in uniform starting to look very nervous… Then we heard two more explosive sounds. But again, no one expressed any concern.”

“No one was telling us what to do,” she added. “They were just herding us like sheep and we were all freaking out and then there was one point where we started to break away and there’s this swarm of people running at us and we just all start running in this direction, not knowing where to go and then all the police officers were there with their guns ready.”

Geraldo Rivera: Hip-Hop's Done 'More Damage to Black & Brown People Than Racism'

Geraldo Rivera gave an interview on HuffPost Live on Tuesday (February 17), and he ended up going on a racial rant in relation to hip hop culture.

“Hip-hop has done more damage to black and brown people than racism in the last 10 years. When you find the youngster”a Puerto Rican from the South Bronx or a black kid from Harlem”who has succeeded in life other than being the one-tenth of one-tenth of one percent that makes it in the music business, that’s been a success in life with his pants around his ass and with visible tattoos. It’s this whole ethos,” the 71-year-old television personality said.

“And I love Russell Simmons. He’s a dear friend of mine. I admire his business acumen. At some point, those guys have to cop to the fact that by encouraging this distinctive culture that is removed from the mainstream, they have encouraged people to be so different from the mainstream that they can’t participate other than, you know, the racks in the garment center and those entry-level jobs, and I lament it. I really do. I think that it has been very destructive culturally,” Geraldo continued.

“I don’t want to go down an entire racial hole because there are a lot of potential explanations for why there is alienation in minority communities [outside of] hip-hop,” Josh Zepps, host of the program, said. “Oh, of course, but I think fashion plays a part,” Geraldo responded.
