Tan France Reveals That His First Job In Fashion Wasn't Exactly Legal

Tan France made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday (January 6) and revealed he got his start in the fashion industry making knock-off Disney denim jackets at his grandfather’s factory.

“I got my start in fashion at my granddad’s factory when I was like seven. It wasn’t child labor, I wasn’t getting paid,” the Queer Eye star told Stephen. “He was a really nice grandad and I loved it so much.”

“We were making denim. I could make a denim jacket by the time I was 13, which is actually very very difficult. However, my granddad died a few years ago and I loved him very very much. I never understood why he got rid of it when I was 13,” Tan recalled. “I just assumed that it wasn’t doing very well so he just got rid of it. My sister said ‘I gotta stop telling that story’ and I was like, ‘why?’ She was like, ‘you were too young to remember why that factory closed down. We were making knock-offs’.”

Tan France also talked about his new Netflix show called Next in Fashion, which debuts on January 29th.
