NFL Player Chris Kluwe: Shirtless for 'Out' Magazine!

NFL player and gay rights advocate Chris Kluwe goes shirtless for his Out magazine cover story in the November 2012 issue, on newsstands October 23.

The 30-year-old Minnesota Vikings punter recently wrote an open letter to Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr., who told the Baltimore Ravens to “order” their linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo to stop advocating for marriage equality. Here is what Chris had to share on his stance:

On taking a stand for gay rights: “It’s all about the Golden Rule. Treat other people as you want to be treated. It’s that simple. It’s something that needs to be spoken about, and it’s something I can do while fulfilling my job as a football player.”

On breaking the football player stereotype: “I’ve always relished breaking that stereotype of the dumb jock athlete because while I enjoyed athletics growing up, I also enjoyed reading and video games, and athletic sport is not what defines me as a person. I think as more and more generations start rising through the NFL, a lot of these kids see that it’s OK to be something other than an athlete.”

    It’s awesome that Chris and some other Hetero NFL players are saying there is nothing wrong with being gay AND equality for all. I applaud Chris and the other brave NFL players who are stepping forward against anti-gay bigotry. Next up NBA & NHL players stepping up for equal rights and discouraging anti-gay hate.

    Please, give me a break. Just because a person does not believe in or support homosexuality doesn’t mean s/he is a mean, hateful, homophobic person. It means they have certain beliefs about behaviors and we need to respect that. They can march and yell for their gay rights, but I also have the right to disagree with their orientation and not support their lifestyles. Sorry, but truth is truth. Societies change all the time especially what’s considered politically correct. BUT the bible and other religious texts DO NOT change. So, go ahead and nail me and others to the cross because we do not believe in gay marriage, but the afterlife is forever and if I don’t stand up for what I believe in now, how will I be judged? As a coward and hypocrite. Give me thumbs down and negative comments: I don’t care because I only care what Jesus thinks of me!

  • oh please

    @AMy: You said a mouthful! lmao. The road to hell is crowded because we are becoming more and more sinful and worldly! But, that’s not my problem hahahaha

    @oh please:

    Not a Christian response at all, so you’d better double-think what Jesus thinks of you. And as far as the Bible goes, take a look at this video of “President Bartlet takes on Dr. Jacobs” from the West Wing. You want to quote the Bible, then you’d better be prepared to back it up in EVERY situation.

    The NHL does have an anti-bullying PSA for gay rights, “If You Can Play, You Can Play.” I’ve seen a couple of them, they run it in Pittsburgh a lot.

    @oh please: it’s true we’re free to have an opinión but what happened when this opinion hurt someone, i mean what happened if someone tell to other person that its not right that white and african american persons can married each other , its that right?¡, if you follow the Bible word by word, so you can’t married with someone if your father want, and he can give you to someone that you don`t love ?, the bible said that but God no, jesus not said anything about homosexuality ,..

    It would be a much better society if more athletes were as brave as Chris is. He’s the best – great guy!

    He’s gorgeous! But more important is gay rights. It’s a shame gay people even have to fight for their rights: we are all human!

    It’s a huge step for gay rights everywhere, not just Maryland. It’s also a huge step to prevent future bullying among teens, hopefully preventing future suicides among youths thinking they have no supporters or mentors. For a long time just like the Armed Services, there has been a “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” Macho Attitude among Jocks. Maybe now that Professional Athletes are backing important topics such as Bullying and Gay rights, people will start to be more accepting of others no matter what they look like or who they choose to marry. I see more and more athletes coming out to support equal rights for everybody. I think if all the all the supporters from all the different sports come together and make one commercial it would send a message to all those bigots in Govt.

    @oh please:

    I find it funny that you claim to know what god or jesus wants, considering you are not them, and the humans, fallible humans, who wrote the bible are not them either. Don’t speak for others
