Shia LaBeouf Shares Personal Emails About 'Orphans' Exit

News broke earlier today that Shia LaBeouf is exiting the Broadway production of Orphans and now he has released a series of emails from the cast and creative team about his departure.

The 26-year-old actor wrote an apology email that he sent to the creative team. He also shared responses from his co-stars Alec Baldwin and Tom Sturridge.

It was revealed in an email from director Dan Sullivan that the creative differences were between Shia and Alec.

“My dad was a drug dealer. He was a sh-t human. But he was a man. He taught me how to be a man. What I know of men, Alec is. A man is good at his job. Not his work, not his avocation, not his hobby. Not his career. His job. A man can look you up and down and figure some things out. Before you say a word, he makes you. From your suitcase, from your watch, from your posture. A man infers,” Shia wrote in the beginning of his letter. Click inside for the full version.

Shia LaBeouf’s Full Apology Letter

“My dad was a drug dealer. He was a sh-t human. But he was a man. He taught me how to be a man. What I know of men, Alec is. A man is good at his job. Not his work, not his avocation, not his hobby. Not his career. His job. A man can look you up and down and figure some things out. Before you say a word, he makes you. From your suitcase, from your watch, from your posture. A man infers,” Shia wrote.

“A man owns up. That’s why Mark McGwire is not a man. A man grasps his mistakes. He lays claim to who he is, and what he was, whether he likes them or not. Some mistakes, though, he lets pass if no one notices. Like dropping the steak in the dirt,” he added.

“He does not rely on rationalizations or explanations. He doesn’t winnow, winnow, winnow until truths can be humbly categorized, or intellectualized, until behavior can be written off with an explanation. A man knows his tools and how to use them – just the ones he needs. Knows which saw is for what, how to find the stud. A man does not know everything. He doesn’t try. He likes what other men know. A man can tell you he was wrong. That he did wrong. That he planned to. He can tell you when he is lost. He can apologize, even if sometimes it’s just to put an end to the bickering. Alec, I’m sorry for my part of a dis-agreeable situation. - Shia.”

Alec Baldwin Writes to Shia LaBeouf

“I’ve been through this before. It’s been a while. And perhaps some of the particulars are different. But it comes down to the fact that what we all do now is critical. Perhaps especially fro you. When the change comes, how do we handle it, whether it be good or bad? What do we learn? I don’t have an unkind word to say about you. You have my word. – AB”

Shia wrote back to Alec, “Same. Be Well. Good luck on the play. You’ll be great.”

Tom Sturridge Writes to Shia LaBeouf

“Are you still here? I don’t really know what to write. I went in this afternoon and they were all there… producers, etc. I said my piece but they didn’t really listen. I don’t understand what has happened here. Maybe you have had a more enlightening conversation with someone by now. All I can say is that it truly was an honour to work with you even if it was only for a few days. I was stunned by the work you were doing, the performance you were giving. I think you lifted the play to a place high than maybe it even deserved to be. I hope this isn’t the last time we work together and I especially hope it isn’t the last time we see each other. Hope you’re ok brother – Tom

“Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance. Tom = good dude – good actor,” Shia tweeted about Tom.

Director Dan Sullivan Writes to Shia LaBeouf

“I’m too old for disagreeable situations. You’re on hell of a great actor. Alec is who he is. You are who you are. You two are incompatible. I should have known it. This one will haunt me. You tried to warn me. You said you were a different breed. I didn’t get it. – Dan

    What the hell?

  • Uh No

lol. This sounds like a bunch of indulgent artsy fartsy bullshit. Shia, get over yourself.

  • Trina

    Well, that’s clears up everything…

  • Reba

I really like Shia, and I think he’s very talented. However, he’s had some serious issues since childhood and some other problems that he’s been trying to deal with for the past few years. I hope he can find a way to overcome all of that because, clearly, his talent is recognized by his peers.

  • Diedre

Is this the role that Shia did drugs for so he could be ‘more real’? To me, his letter sounds like the ramblings of an addict.
I have to also agree with Uh No’s summation about it sounding like artsy fartsy BS.
Sounds like Shia needs some help.

  • JMHO

It’s not cool to release emails.

  • minnie

I agree, especially the one from Tom Sturridge – his email seemed genuinely personal….I feel bad that he is getting dragged into this mess.

That acid messed up Shia….just the beginning of problems

  • emily

Why would he release these emails instead of just issuing a general statement?

These clear NOTHING up and just adds more drama for him and the remaining cast.

Hope he gets the help he clearly needs (whatever the problem is).

  • hay

Why would he release people’s emails? That’s a really awful thing to do to people who were trying to be nice to him. But from his email he sounds seriously unhinged.

  • no

Alcoholic, arrogant and egotistical will not get you very far in life, no matter how talented you think you are.
Shia really needs to get over himself.

  • Pat

*Confused look* Is Shia going through something because I don’t know what the hell is going on and I don’t get this at all (the email and audition video that is).
I liked him best in that 2007-2009 or 2010 period.

  • jo

the fuk did i just watch!?

  • AngelEyes

So that’s how deeply artsy Shia is? He’d been in the industry for years! It takes an Alec Baldwin to stop him on his tracks? No wonder Megan Fox left the Transformers, add Michael Bay with another artsy bitsy, she went mad!

  • Lilan

yep…the acid made him trip kid..he be trippin !

  • ha ha

he’s so messed up, his career will soon be sabatoged

  • cmac

He always looks like a serial killer to me.

    Charlie Sheen meltdown coming ….winning!

  • Exit stage left

Dude crossed the line here. No one will ever trust him again. He’s toast.

  • Paulie

    Get over yourself!

  • porquenon

Stage acting is not the same as film acting. Some. People have the training and know how and some people don’t. I’ve seen Baldwin on stage and he was great – however in his last outing his costar quit because she feared his “method” acting. Orphans is not an easy play and Shia may have been out of his element having to perform live nightly regardless of Baldwin’s antics and attitude.

  • Lou

@minnie: Releasing these emails seems like a high school girl revengeful attitude. This was really childish.

  • ash

anything he did is wrong. Satisfied?

    haters gonna hate.

  • :)

WTF? I don’t understand any of this.

  • rach

I bet he has a burn book.

  • scarlett

Its just not how you conduct yourself making things public like this, it’s hurt no one but himself. Sullivan is a very hands off director and Shia clearly needs his work micromanaged, Baldwin knew it. It’s fairly obvious he didn’t quit, he was fired.

  • Shandydandy

His artsy angsty writing would be a lot more convincing if he didn’t plagiarize the whole freaking thing from a 2009 Esquire article. A man steals other men’s words, I guess. What a messed up loser.

  • vy

I’m so stupid. I have no idea what’s going on. I can’t follow. Someone please explain. 0_x !!!!!

  • Chels

It sounds like they just didn’t get along and Shia didn’t want to get locked in doing eight shows a week plus rehearsals with a man he didn’t get along with or enjoy being around. I’m sure Shia has other projects he can do that pay a lot more than theater, and if it wasn’t going to be “fun,” he didn’t want to be part of it. Good thing he figured that out before the show opened.

  • Mark

    You’re not a man, you’re a deuche.

  • Kaleigh

I would take Shia any day over Baldwin (who btw has serious drug issues as well). Baldwin is also really full of himself. His reply to Shia? Taken line by line from Batman. No original thought there. A lot of actors have said Alec Baldwin is awful to work with because he worships his own shadow. You know how the media is, without those emails they would have have said all sorts of crap happened that didn’t. Shia is just setting the record straight.

no. the role he dropped acid for is a movie. the necessary death of
charlie countryman. labeouf, evan rachel wood, and bond baddie who will play hannibal on tv mads mikkelsen. at film fest berlinale this movie flop got a 0.8 out of 4. lowest rating ever for a movie.

  • jen

It is so funny to think that this drug alcohol thing is just one actor!!
It is most of Hollywood. …So add in creativity, which takes alot of energy to get into character… and there is soup.

  • Ramones

let’s see. labeouf’s track record. movie films.
lawless. got raging drunk on moonshine. scared the actress mia wackowska so bad she called agent wanting out of the project.
the necessary death of charlie countryman. dropped acid for real for this movie. sent tapes of it to evan rachel wood girl for her approval. caused the director frederick bond to have in shia words an undisciplined set.
nymphomaniac. soft core porn movie from lars von trier of denmark where mads mikkelsen is from . blabbed constantly how he would be willing to screw for real in this movie. porn doubles were actually used. shia supposedly got the job because he sent a sex tape of him and his girlfriend kathryn pho having sex. is this part true? who knows. but awful damn funny shortly after this movie filmed pho broke up with him. maybe one day she spill the story.
now fired from a broadway play. gets mad, rams hand in door. discloses private emails. plagirism of article from esquire as his words.
did i forgot to mention his proud announcement of having ‘nailed’ megan fox during the transformer movie. he thinks it was when she was broke up with her boyfriend not sure.
this actor is not very professional acting. scaring co workers, dropping drugs. what if he had bad reaction to the lsd and really hurt someone badly. that is not cool. this ain’t no kid, 26 year old man. professionals who take up for him and not hold him accountable for his actions are not very smart or professional either. just sayin he’s nice, good actor so no trouble for themselves. harrison ford had the guts to call him out on how he is. other actors don’t.

Surprised Shia is leaving the play? I’m more surprised no one put Baldwin in an asylum by now.

  • sally

@porquenon. I couldn’t agree more. The main problem with most of the young American actors/actresses are their lack of training , and they have no theatre experience. For example, you will never see Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Leo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie act on stage- because it will reveal their acting limitations ( also NY theatre critics & London West End critics are brutal and picky ) . The most authentic acting is acting on stage- no camera work, no film editing, and no repeated takes. On stage, you can either act or you cannot act. Bottom Line.

P.S. I have to applaud Shia LaBeouf for trying and for taking risks. It is obvious he couldn’t handle this stage production, and he wants to be known for more than those lousy Transformers flicks. I hope he isn’t discouraged, because I want him to continue to explore his artistry and pursue another Broadway play. To be fair, LaBeouf was , surprisingly, good in Lawless. I really am rooting for Shia.

Baldwin is trash and needs to get his teeth kicked in.

Big deal. All actors are a little crazy and often mentally damaged. That’s why we love them.

  • Pam

This wasn’t BS. Has no one felt all the emotions that arise fresh out of a bad situation, say things to show your sorrow and work it out, and then eventually get over it? These people were simply going through the grieving of such a time. I think Shia revealed all of this to justify himself before the vultures landed to accuse and condemn him. I understand him. People say he has problems, but I just see a young man struggling with outrageous fame that hounds him day and night in the form of mean-spirited strangers. I watch these youtube videos of him being hounded and stalked and provoked to the point of insanity, and I know, I would collapse into a puddle of tears every day if that were me having to endure it. It’s nearly just evil.
