Beyonce to 'British Vogue': 'I'm A Modern Day Feminist'

Beyonce shows off her fabulous figure on the cover of British Vogue magazine’s May 2013 issue, on newsstands Monday (April 8).

Here’s what the 30-year-old entertainer had to share with the mag:

On believing in equal rights for all: “But I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman. I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.”

On her demanding job: “I’m always bruised somewhere – my legs, my hips. But you’ve already started so you’ve just gotta fight through it.”

On defending using Mrs. Carter for her world tour name: “I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been. It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do’. The purpose of my body became completely different.”

Says Beyonce’, a woman who has never lived outside the control of a man. First it was her father and then her husband. She has never, ever, ever had autonomy and independence from a man.

  • Jay xyz

She is personification of “try hard”. No fun, no spontaneity – everything about her is so rehearsed and calculated.

  • toby

She has no idea what feminist is.

  • 99

@Keiko What are you talking? Don’t you have a life to care? That’s none of your business.

she looks older than some years ago. The 30′s definitely got her.

  • gurlsitdown

making a song called “Bow Down” does not equate to feminism just plain rude. and i fail to see how she is a modern day feminist when, yes, single ladies is a liberating song for women however she is not single or viewed as in control of her relationship. jay z is clearly the one with the most power.

and i remember when she made “cater 2 u” which was basically serving her husband. cmon bey at least back up your point with evidence.

  • Paula

She must think people are dumb and have no memory at all.

  • dani

Lord, another self-delusional celebrity thinking we are all stupid enough to fall for her line.

  • Jim

Feminist who says to women to bow down???

  • Michel

She is so full of shit. Does she even believe the crap that comes out of her own mouth? Celebrities have no clue what it is like to live in the real world, or to speak like a normal human being, unrehearsed and honest.

  • DianaB

A lot of people don’t realize this, but Beyonce is actually a 2,000 year old centipede from outer space. She inhaled and devoured the former members of Destiny’s Child, and that is why she is so powerful now.

  • ugh

“Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything?” — and water is wet

seriously any time someone calls themselves a feminist i have to roll my eyes.. beyonce has no problem sl*t shaming other women so she needs to slow her roll..

  • ugh

@gurlsitdown: it’s funny because her fangirls will post things on tumblr like ‘equality for all women’ bla bla but if beyonce insults other women they don’t see anything wrong with it =/

  • B.

You’re a big Illuminatti. That’s what you are.

  • me

    soooo budget.

why couldn’t JOAN SMALLS or any of the SUPERMODELS or any of the happening new Asian models…Liu Wen or Du Juan get a cover????!!!!

  • me

  • Kayla

Beyonce is anything BUT a feminist! She has grown famous by an industry that is abuses through over-sexualization of women and uses women as a commodity! What a joke, bey. Not to mention telling women to bow down. Your stuff stinks just like everyone else.

Stop playing with feminism you airhead! Stick to singing and leave feminism to the pros.

  • Macy

This is the worst cover of British Vogue, so plain and boring

Why can’t she be original……#beyherenow? Really!! Andy Whitfield, the star of Spartacus, died of cancer and he had Be Here Now tattooed on him and it was also the name of his documentary that covered his battle with cancer.

  • Journalistic

Ugh ew to every woman who has a baby and says “my body has a different purpose now” SO cliche. STOP IT.

  • Chill out

Wow so many haters! Seeing women snipe at each other like this makes me happy to be a member of the opposite gender. Jay Z tells rappers to bow down to him all the time when he repeatedly sings his own high praises. I personally am happy to see a wildly successful young female artist with a good head on her shoulders despite her dealing with fame from such a young age.

  • Lisa

Beyonce went from being under her father’s control to being under her husband’s control. She has to “guess” she is a feminist and you can tell by this interview, she has no idea what that word means!

  • aha

I dont think she understand what is FEMINIST. She is a dumb big rear end.

  • marie

” Why do you have to label yourself anything? ” saying that she is a modern day feminist is labeling herself she always contradicts herself

  • kat

What the hell is a “modern day feminist?” She basically just outlined exactly what a FEMINIST is, just didn’t have the balls to say because of some of the negative connotations that come with it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think she’s a bad person (in fact I actually like her very much), I just think she’s contradicting the shit out of herself there.

  • an

Well no matter how much I love bee ! I just think that it’s way “TOO MUCH ” . You cannot be defined by your child . Ok you gave birth and your life changed blabla that’s cool .

And there is always a man by her side , so I don’t exactly call it – feminist . wtv

  • Toni

I love love love this interview!

“Why do you have to label yourself anything?”

    She’s really smart.

  • really

    Girl has no insight lmao!!!
