Leonardo DiCaprio Covers 'Esquire' May 2013

Leonardo DiCaprio is all suited up on the cover of Esquire magazine’s May 2013 issue.

Here’s what the 38-year-old The Great Gatsby actor had to share with the mag:

On being single: “Six months of being on location or being off in Morocco or someplace like that is not the best thing for a relationship.”

On what propels him: “I always thought of myself as the underdog, because I didn’t have nice enough clothes or maybe my hair didn’t look good. And so you have to understand – getting your foot in the door is like winning the lottery. It’s literally like winning the lottery if you get to have a career. And I’ve always felt, Okay, now I’ve gotten this shot, and I’m lucky to have gotten this shot, and if I don’t do this to the best of my ability – if I don’t work my as* off and make a life of it – I’ve squandered this incredibly golden opportunity. And that’s always been what has propelled me.”

On his early success: “I really didn’t understand what fame was and I didn’t understand what being in a giant hit was and I didn’t understand what a giant hit Titanic was compared to other giant hits. There was no rule book. There was nobody to navigate me through the experience of being watched all the time and nobody to tell me how to be normal when everybody is acting and looking at me differently.”

He’s so self aware. It’s so nice he’s still unassuming, grounded and appreciative of what he’s got. Some young celebs should seriously learn fom him.

  • hmm

He looks older than 38…look at those wrinkles…

  • What Happened?

Leo needs to take better care of himself he looks like a 50 year old.

  • Ha ha

    @hmm:

At least he aint botoxed like everyone else

  • ace11

Guy really blew it when he let Giselle go…..

Been down hill for him ever since

  • Sweetness

This time I MUST agree. He looks way older than 38..what happened to him. Some men age and look sexier but in his case he looks unattractive. 38 is way too young to look this beat down. Detox and Yoga for Leo..Pronto!

  • ????

Six months on location is not good for a relationship? Last time he was on location in NYC and his last public gf actually lives in NYC so what was the problem? Being an aging womanizer is more like a relationship killer…
I don’t even wanna read the rest of it. He knows how to answer these questions so the public can see him as this grounded and cool person that he isn’t. He doesn’t live up to his words in real life. These interviews are just part of his acting job and promo for his movies.

  • ????

I think the cover is horrible. There are way better photos of him in the magazine.
I agree with some of the comments he does look older than his real age. Especially with the beard.

  • Cece

I could care less about his personal life, and i definitely think that growing up without much explains a lot of his personal behavior. I just think that he’s a fantastic actor. Never saw Titanic, but I’ve loved him in just about everything else. I thought he was stunningly good in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and he was just a kid there.

  • Message

Hey, everybody! Definitely not Leo’s best pictorial. He does look older in these pictures, which is weird because he has been looking good lately. We all know he says the right things in all of his interviews. Actions speak louder than words. I hope for the best for him, though. And I already have a babysitter lined up for dinner/Gatsby date night with the hubs!

  • ????

I agree. He says the right things that people want to hear but that doesn’t necessarily mean he speaks the truth. And I also agree with Message that actions speak louder than words. Someone should tell him that…

  • haha

its not the best picture of him, but the photoshoot inside the magazine is much better. he looks pretty good for 38…hate to break the news, but a majority of 38 year olds don’t look like THAT.

  • Wizzer

    @7 Agree 100%
I also don’t understand the ‘underdog’ comments.
He actually had success early in life, unlike others and with his looks has managed to maintain it. He did not have much of an awkward phase. Other blonde blue eyed peers like Jonathan Brandis crashed and burned.
Good for him, but Leo is very much part of the establishment, like Johnny Depp he’s no underdog not then and not now but it sounds cool to say it

  • superficial

They look at him because he’s hot.

  • L

the fact he doesn’t do serious relationships, doesn’t negate what he said here about career drive, Fame and Success. His love life is his business(look @his short answer); virtually, he has never talked about his relationships, made them public, done publicity stunts, or tried to coverup the fact that he’s a serial dater. So, judging his persona, the way he deals with work and his awareness of his surrounding by how much he dates is just ridiculous IMO.
When he royally f ucks up, harming people, breaking up marriages, addressing people arrogantly and pretentiously then we can say w/e.
This coming from someone who has never found him attractive and just liked him in very few movies.

  • laly

Worst cover ever… but seriously who cares. He can act.

  • ????

@L: It`s not just his private life. That was the first question in the post and it immediately stood out for me. It`s the same with the underdog comment as Wizzer pointed it out.
I gave up reading his interviews a long time ago because I think he is selling an image and a movie. It almost feels like his answers are practiced and they are repetitive at times. He sticks to a certain image but as it was said earlier actions speak louder than words.

  • blondie

@????: I’m sorry to bother you but perhaps his private life ain’t as interesting as people think. His movies and his job are way more interesting. So what else can he say? He’s always being asked the same questions. He must be tired of always answering the same over and over again.

  • ????

Didn’t I just say that it’s not only his private life?
I don’t think giving repetitive answers is about the questions. Maybe he is not that interesting himself. I do feel like he is selling an image in these interviews.

  • ????

All I’m saying is that I used to love reading his interviews but not anymore. It just feels like he is in a role when answering questions. That’s it.

  • blondie

@????: You are twisting everything. He’s an actor and nobody should care about his private life but he knows that for many, it is still interesting so he politely answers not giving much info because he’s not dumb and before everyone else it’s himself and his happyness…. He’s an actor before a clownish entertainer and many things must be kept in private as many people should.

  • ????

@21: Well, you say I`t twisting everything meanwhile you are ignoring my comment in which I said it`s not only about his private life. In spite of that you keep focusing on the private life part…

  • L

    @????:
You have to understand that this is HiS JOB, you can’t just expect him to talk like the interviewer is one of his closest friends. His just doing what everyone of us would do in work related settings.
Again as long a he remains greatful and acknowledging all the opportunities he has had, which still better than most celebrities, he’s good in my book.
Lol gotta admit that the underdog thing is very true; feeling like the underdog is totally independent from the opportunities you’re given imho
he still hasn’t got mayor awards yet, the guy started really young and with ALL the amazing opportunities at 38 is still trying to get the approval of his piers.

  • Isabelle

Really like him as an actor but hes kinda douchey with women.

  • Imature

He is an immature child, it really is not good for a relationship.

  • ????

I don’t think I ever said that he should treat the interviewer as his buddy. But that doesn’t mean he has to sell an image and not to live up to his own words. It seems like disagreeing with you is not good in your book. Not seeing him the way you do is just fine, you know.

  • haha

its funny how people rag on him for his relationships, and can’t seem to get past it. lol he dates young pretty blondes. WHAT A CRIME lol.

  • IKR

    @haha:
Agreed. How many times can the same conversation be had over and over? Some are waaayyy too invested in this man’s sex/personal life.
Esquire celeb write ups tend to be pretentious I hope this one isn’t

  • L

    @haha:
Lol ifkr, like he forced them to date him lol

To ???: lol the thing is that you’re stating that he doesn’t live up to his words, like you know for a fact.. and from what I gathered from your comments just because he dates too much and because his relationships and the way he talks about his work and experiences, specially the last cause he has to change his answers and povs on the same subject every interview right?? lol

  • ????

No, I don’t know it for a fact like you don’t know otherwise. I thought it was obvious that I post my opinion and how I see him just like you. Or did I say otherwise?
I never said he dates too much so it seems you were gathering your information from someone else’s comments. Also it’s not about changing answers it’s about selling an image in interviews. You are hung up on my remark about repetitive answers and twist it so you can defend him. Are you like his cyber bodyguard and everyone has to agree with you?

  • http://funnywitch.com funny witch

BORING! And The Great Gatsby gonna flop hard. But I love Carey Mulligan)

  • Sam

He looks 45 instead of 38, dude’s not aging well…and his head looks weird now, so big not just in these pictures.

  • Please

“Six months of being on location or being off in Morocco or someplace like that is not the best thing for a relationship.”…?????
    ____
Really? Then how come other actors who all have to work abroad and have families can make it work with their wives? Could they be a little more mature, perhaps?

  • Love Leo

Leo stated in various interviews in past he hasn’t met a woman who takes him for him and not for Leo the actor.

  • @33

Exactly! He should say he doesn’t want to talk about his private life or at this point of his life he is happy to be single and not looking for a serious relationship. I would respect him more for an answer like that.
@34: Does it seem like he is looking for a woman like that? It’s hard to find something if you are not looking.

  • six months is NOT the problem.

    The problem is YOU Leo.

Like being an ignoramous and dating the same blond bimbo over and over and over again isnt the problem Leo!?? Its the SIX MONTHS thats the problem! suuuuurrreeeee…lol

  • Love Leo

    @35
Yes hence he not married and broke off models.

  • : )

    here come the judgmental b!tches…

  • JJ

Leo doesn’t have to get married if he doesn’t want to. His career is obviously more important to him. I could care less about who he’s dating or if he never gets married. Can’t wait for the film!

  • @:)

Indeed. Having an opinion that isn’t necessarily positive and doesn’t agree with you makes people ‘judgemental b!tches’. Thank god you are perfect!

  • well

@: ): well isnt this the judgemental b8tch calling other judgenebtal b4tchies, judgemental

  • Odd

Ooh. Fight! Fight! As expected in a Leo thread. Again. You females need to get boyfriends. Seriously

  • Tamara

He is cetainly not referring to his “10 month romance” with Erin H. Because while he was supposedly dating her, he was mostly working in the same exact city she was working and living in, New York. But it seems like he was more enjoying his male co-stars and male friends during his weekends off than being with her.
But who was he dating when he was working in Morrocco?

  • @42

And you just keep analyzing people based on their comments. So much better!

  • @Tamara

Morocco… Body of Lies so I assume he was dating Bar.

  • Tamara

    @#45
    Thanks.

  • LOL

He mentioned ‘on other locations’ first and not only Morrocco’. He was generalizing about his relationships than anything. They are probably all interchangeable to him at this point.

  • #43

    @Tamara:
Not true. While he was ‘supposedly’ dating Erin as you insist on phrasing it (still pained I see) he was also filming in NOLA for Django Unchained and doing post production for Gatsby in Sydney Jan/Feb while she was in NY. And when Leo was in other relationships he very much also enjoyed the companionship of male friends, strippers and waitresses, no matter where the girl-friend on call was. Same old same old Leo.

Ah the ex-girlfriend stans ( Erin/Bar) watchers are here taking comparison notes. Bashing the other. They are both failed D list models and doormats who were dumped. All we need is for someone to mention jewelery or accessories any one is wearing as a desperate prayer of a “sign of something”.
