Kevin McHale Says 'Glee' Is 'Off the Air For a Reason'

Glee star Kevin McHale is getting candid about the show’s cancellation in a new interview.

The 26-year-old actor was asked if his character Artie would ever get a spinoff. “Towards the end, there weren’t that many people watching Glee,” he told The Huffington Post. “So I don’t know how many people would then watch a spinoff. We’re off the air for a reason.”

Kevin also said that he thinks the show jumped the shark when they lost one of the show’s stars.

“I will say, not to bring it down or anything, when Cory Monteith died. I don’t think the show ever came back from that,” Kevin said. “It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but the story was going in one direction with his character [Finn Hudson] and he was one of two main characters of the show.”

“I think after that the vibe on set was different,” he added. “It was just weird for us being there never mind actually having to be filming. Being one of the writers in that sort of situation — I wouldn’t have known what I would have done because I was like, ‘I don’t really even want to be here.’”

An Artie spinoff? The most boring character spinoff? The show jumped the shark after season 3.

Jared, you have the most pathetic, gayest job ever. like you don’t do anything for the world, you don’t get your own news. Like how do celebs know you? I don’t understand

  • John

    Like his honesty.

  • Jen

I stopped watching Glee after the second season I think. As for the rest of his answer, he’s not lying.

  • FerCat

It was a novelty show that went on too long.

  • gaslight

He is right also the show could only go so far after most the cast leaving.

The show jumped the shark long time ago when they started to focus covering sucky popular songs like Justine Queerber songs for example and ignoring some old awesome songs, also they shoved on everyone throat how gays are so cool propaganda and hetero couple are lame, then the final nail in the coffin was Cory untimely death, that practically just turned into annoying Rachel and the gays shows.

wow the hate just flows out of you … they just wanted to make a show where everyone felt welcome and represented …. feel free to watch every other show on TV if LGBT teens offend you so much … if you watch a show about the arts you are going to run into LGBT people … we are everywhere!!! :)

I always thought he was an interesting character that never got enough screen time. Kevins voice is almost as strong as Amber’s and Lea’s yet he got very little singing parts.

  • vn_102

Geeze, there’s no personal hate there, just stating that extreme gay propaganda show is what ticked many hetero viewers off, what starting off to be cute singing show turned out to be more gay advertisement shows as it going by years.
Guess it’s true then that you totally fit the LGBT stereotype crowds that were so over sensitive, that made nothing personal to be something more.

It’s cool in the first season that Kurt was trying to be accepted and then everybody were suddenly being gay then oh well.

It’s true that the show sucked before his death. But that was because of the crappy writing. It was absolutely unrealistic and not a bit funny!
