Will Smith Joining Jada Pinkett-Smith in Oscars 2016 Boycott

Will Smith has announced he will be joining wife Jada Pinkett-Smith in her boycott of the 2016 Oscars.

“No,” the 47-year-old actor said when asked if he would be going. “My wife’s not going. It would be awkward to show up with Charlize [Theron] … we’ve discussed it. … We’re part of this community. But at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say this is OK.”

Will talked about diversity in Hollywood as a whole as well during his one-on-one interview with ABC News. Watch the interview below…

Why would he have attended anyway? Neither he nor his film were nominated.

  • Ariana

Wow. Such a shame Will has joined in. I thought he was smarter then this. Dissapointed big time.
I feel sorry for all those who are nominated for an Oscar. They should not be made to feel guilty about their performances. Will Smith and others are basically saying they don’t deserve to be nominated because they are white. How utterly racist and juvenile.

  • Nameless

Will, WTF , your new movie is weak, Did you expect Oscar for it ? Seriously ?

  • http://rememberingthedesireisprivate.blogspot.com/ GerrysFascinatingWoman

    Will Smith, Concussion.

I have to question her at this point in their relationship if this isn’t some kind of subliminal punishment for him, and he’s going along with it.

Let them stay away as it only reflects badly on them. This isn’t the way to ‘solve’ the issue. And frankly, the awards and nominations are based on merit, not race. And there isn’t one show I’ve seen anywhere on any venue that does not have African-Americans in it. The augment isn’t valid anymore. And what is the message, require an African-American to be nominated in each category? Sounds that way to me.

  • https://www.tumblr.com/blog/themoulinblue Kary

They have their own agenda. They don’t support diversity. Both are angry because they wasted a lot of their time campaigning and throwing parties and it didn’t work. I didn’t see them boycotting Oscars when an asian or an hispanic actor/actress got snubbed. Get over it.

  • lshelton22

Did they boycott last year after Selma was snubbed? He just looks bitter and self-serving. Disappointing.

  • suk bin

He’s talking like francois hollande …

  • Jenny from the flop

omg you’re such a loser, will. you’re just pissed that you didn’t get nominated for an oscar, you’re a joke to the oscars! not because your black, but because you have no talent. you’re pathetic for trying to use the race card. grow the fuck up, pussy!

  • Casey C

Can someone explain why it would be awkward with Charlize? I don’t understand that

  • Kaitlyn

Imagine at your workplace or your school that a white person opts to not attend a “celebration of their peers” simply because a white guy isn’t awarded for “Top Sales” or “Cum Laude”. It would be considered selfish and racist. Yet here we are watching the Smiths doing exactly that.

The actions and sentiments that this family is doing is not only racist, but a big F-U to their peers in their industry. I really hope the media points out the narcissism of this family, or better yet, ignores them and their attempts at forcing their children into an entertainment industry that doesn’t need them.

  • Curt Noydb

Thats ok…your rep is now so damaged I think a lot of people will be boycotting your movies.

  • gradybridges

Will Smith doesn’t hire black directors for the movies he’s in. Fraud.

  • Kaitlyn

Suicide Squad will be successful. Margot Robbie is nailing it, Leto is making people curious and the premise is interesting. But in the end Will Smith (despite being horribly miscast as a masked hit man that refuses to wear a mask) will be credited for its success.

  • Kaitlyn

But He hires black actors. His son, his daughter, his wife. Hmmm I’m starting to see a pattern.

  • TeaCakes

Voting: 6000plus people in showbiz who are Academy members cast individual votes several weeks ahead of the announcement. These voters are located worldwide. They don’t all phone each other to “decide who wins”. They are in most countries and are of all races and minorities. The votes are sent in, tallied and results are WHAT THEY ARE. How in the hell can WS think this is racist?????????? It’s the way it is….he can’t deal with it, then GTHO of showbiz and let someone else bring home those $25 mil paychecks. You’re boycotted WS.

  • Arx

Wow you’re ignorant. He said that all of the nominees are amazing. I don’t see why white people are so threatened. All that their asking is that people of colour are recognized for their accomplishments and talent. Two years of only white nominees is a problem that needs to be addressed.

  • TeaCakes

Very few people watch the oscars or even care anyway……..LOL

  • Shelly

Well of course he’s following his wife. Now we can see who really wears the pants in this family! I think this whole topic is so silly. They just want attention that’s what it all boils down to. Grow up!

  • Ariana

No I am correct. I find it funny how Will and Jada are speaking out against the Academy being too ‘white’ and they don’t do it when Will is a nominee. Its a case of sour grapes and racism.

  • VanityInsecurity

Not surprised.. but how about this instead of getting angry or disappointed at these spoiled rich non-talent actors Im going to never support them again. Will never watch any of their movies. That is how Im going to boycott them & their selfish ideals. I suggest we all do the same.

  • Candid K

Affirmative action is not the solution. The whole point of winning an award is validation that you gave the best performance, not getting an award simply to tick certain boxes. Should we insist that each year each nominee has to fill a certain demographic? 1 Hispanic, 1 Asian,1 homosexual, 1 transsexual & 1 African American? This is the most attention Spike Lee has had in 2 decades, so I can understand why he’s vocal about this. Will Smith had no problem with inclusion when he won his Oscar, but now that his career is as dead as his beard wife’s, he suddenly starts screaming racism. Great black actors, male & female have won Oscar awards in the past, so I don’t buy into this whole throwing their toys out of the pram because little Willy didn’t get a nod this year. Up your game, bro. Don’t rely on bitterness to push you ahead of others who deserve their Oscar nods, just as you did yours, once.

  • Stolia

    Im going to join you.

  • Arx

I never said anything about affirmative action. You can’t tell me that only white actors have given oscar worthy performances for two years in a row. It amazes me how “butt hurt” white people are acting when people ask to be included.

  • Arx

I partly agree but there’s obviously a problem when ONLY WHITE PEOLE ARE GETTING NOMINATED. If all asian people where nominated for oscars white ppl would be up in arms. I don’t see anything wrong with people being upset that there isn’t diversity at that award show. Hell there are more white people nominated for BET awards than there are black people for oscars.

  • Candid K

I’m actually black. Name one great black performance that was overlooked and I’ll show you at least 3 Asian & white ones that were also overlooked. This is ALL about affirmative action. It’s all about forcing black representation through boycott. For decades we have fought for a fair system where people shouldn’t be judged on colour but performance, yet the moment certain members of our community don’t get the recognition they think they deserve, they scream racism. It infuriates me! Step your game up & you will win another deserved Oscar. Or would you prefer one given purely because the academy were forced by law, due to your colour?

  • Candid K

Yeah, right. What was the last Spike Lee film, you saw? I remember Jada Pinkett’s hard face from the Matrix, but I haven’t ever paid money to see her specifically. Face it, those moaning are industry has-beens. They can afford to scream racism because they stood no chance being hired anyway.

  • Ash

I certainly won’t miss them, Jada is a mediocre actress and Will it’s a hit and miss, usually miss. Sour grapes all around.

  • Conte435

He wasn’t complaining about lack of diversity in Hollywood and in the Oscars when he was the biggest movie star in the planet alongside Tom Cruise, making blockbusters after blockbusters, and rolling in the millions.

His time has passed. He can’t buy Oscar nominations anymore due to his celebrity status. Will is a mediocre actor who should be thankful that he got nominated twice for sub-par performances.

  • Ariana

BET is more racist then the Oscars. Barely anyone who is not black gets nominated. And they too exclude Asians, Hispanics, Indians, Native, etc.

  • Conte435

The nominees worked their whole lives for this , biggest moment of their careers.

For most wouldn’t come again and the majority nominees have worked for years in the industry don’t get big pay checks unlike Will Smith and to be hijacked by delusional Swith family other race peddlers with self serving fake controversy.

Will Smith and beard wife all for nepotism, which is actual problem Hollywood .

  • j b

Why would Will Smith and his wife show up anyway? He wasn’t nominated so he will just join the others who weren’t nominated and won’t come.

  • disqus_tu0VPi4B9Z

The Smiths… ridiculous and complexed people. I think the only racists are them.

  • smmy33

I guess critics all racist too.

The critic choice awards last Sunday, 1000′s critic vote for had ALL whites nominees in their acting categories and no black lead film in their 10 Best films of the Year.

  • smmy33

I guess black people are ” butt hurt” all the time since they have so many exclusive awards that only black entertainers can win.

  • Maggie P.U.

It is not about race, color, etc. It is about how you are in your craft, the producer, director etc. The race thing is so old, and Smith and his other especially are forgetting BET for example. Now, are whites, etc going to boycott awards from there. Doubt it….because there are more important, serious and certifiable things to “boycott”. Like how women and children are treated in the Middle East, Veterans are done and so on….

  • Ariana

Agreeded. Apparently the main reason why Will Smith isn’t in Independence Day 2 is because he wanted Jaden to be in the movie but the director said no. So Will threw a tantrum and then left. The Smiths are hypocrites and the reason why Hollywood is not diverse is because people like their children get ahead then other talented hard working people. Nepotism and cronyism is why Hollywood sucks.

  • Ariana

He and other crying racism should cry it out when they are the ones up for an award. Not when they are not invited or are not nominees for the Oscars. I would like Will Smith to stop pushing his untalented children down everyone’s throats too. His kids have no talent and the roles they get are due to daddy’s great connections.

  • Ariana

So true. Jada and Co. are making it harder for blacks and other groups to be accepted now.
Now when a black or an other POC wins an Oscar, they will feel and know they only got in due to some Affirmative Action BS. And their other colleagues who are nominated along with them will feel the same. This will creative divisions amongst different races and groups in Hollywood. Disgusting what they have done.

  • Ariana

I refuse to watch anymore of Spike Lee’s movies. I love Inside Man but he is such a hateful and racist man.
If he thinks the Academy is racist and does not want to participate by boycotting, then he should return the Honorary Oscar he got back in October in protest at the Governors Oscar Awards. Same with Lupita and Clooney, Return your Oscars if you feel this is a racist award show.

  • Ariana

He is made the highest paid actors lists dozens of time, yet he get mad when he isn’t up to get the golden little man? LOL!

  • Eathan Crane

I am so dissapointed in Will Smith, i used to love him and his movies. This interview is the biggest mistake he has done, he should have kept quiet.

So basically what they are saying, they will change the voting system
so that black people can vote for black actors, because they are black,
so they end up being nominated. I’m scared at the future of Oscars
looking like MTV Awards with Ice Cube, Kevin Hart and Nia Long winning
    awards.

When will people understand that the votes for Oscar nominations are NOT based on skin color but actual actors’ performance?

  • Ariana

Great comparison. if a white person behaved like this, they would be branded racist. When the Smiths or Spike Lee act like spoiled, racist brats because nobody from their race is included this year, they get mad.
I am sure these ‘boycotters’ will be back next year begging for directors to take them for work and I hope they are blacklisted in Hollywood for doing so.
Can you imagine Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock saying they will boycott an award show because there aren’t enough ‘white’ nominees? Their careers would be over within a nano-second. I see the double standards here.

Soon the Kardashians will be asking for Oscars and they do what the Smiths did. Cry racism. I too fear for what will become of the Oscars.

So according to Will, the AA should nominate poorly made movies like Barbershop, Ride Along, Madea, I think I Love My Wife and nominate the likes of Tyler Perry for Best Director? BS!
Can you imagine Kevin Smith crying racism and demanding that Clerks and Clerks 3 be Oscar nominees? LOL!

He is still one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, even though his last few movies underperformed. He’s a prime example of a successfull black actor with a successfull black family, and yet they have the nerve to publicly complain. Shame, shame, shame.

I respect Ice Cube for saying he doesn’t care for the Oscars, he cares for his public and the people who watched SOC and made it gross over $200 million worldwide. He’s happy about that and proud of the work he, and everyone involved in making that movie, achieved.

But i guess Will Smith doesn’t have that public support behind him as none of his last few films crossed that $200 million mark, and that was something that he easily sold only by selling his name before, even though it was crap like Wild Wild West. And now he’s crying for attention on national TV.

  • Eathan Crane

Exactly. The biggest reason that that perfect family is now unliked by the public eye is their constant pushing of their kids in the entertainment world.

I don’t have anything against that, but i guess they are bitter because they ran into a lot of closed doors when they were asking for their kids to play certain roles. They’re no longer as powerfull, as you know what they say in Hollywood, you’re only good as your last movie. I guess The Smiths are no longer good as their last films sucked big time.
