Maria Sharapova Announces She Failed a Drug Test (Video)

Maria Sharapova has announced that she failed a drug test taken back in January at the Australian Open.

The 28-year-old tennis player did not know that a drug she was legally using in the past had just been added to the prohibited substance list in January.

“I did fail the test and I take full responsibility for it. For the past ten years, I have been given a medicine called Mildronate by my family doctor and a few days ago after I received the ITF letter I found out that it also has another name of Meldonium, which I did not know,” Maria said during a press conference on Monday (March 7). “It’s very important for you to understand that for 10 years this medicine was not on the banned list and I had been legally taking the medicine for the past 10 years.”

“On January 1, the rules have changed and Meldonium became a prohibited substance, which I had not known,” Maria added. “I was given this medicine by my doctor for several health issues I was having in 2006.”

Some of the issues that Maria faced included the flu every couple months and the evidence of diabetes, which runs in her family.

“I know with this that I face consequences,” Maria continued. “I don’t want to end my career this way, and I really hope that I will be given another chance to play this game. I know many of you thought that I would be announcing my retirement, but if I was ever going to announce my retirement, it wouldn’t be in a downtown Los Angeles hotel with this fairly ugly carpet.”

She’s getting old and isn’t as agile as before. That drug very likely kept her fit. If she wins a major tournament now I will be very surprised

I don’t think this will end up being that big a deal for Sharapova, if what she said is the whole truth. It sounds like a honest mistake, especially if she had been taking the drug for 10 years and since the drug was banned one month before she tested positive for it. It was classy of her to take full responsibility but you can bet someone one her team was fired and really screwed up. Really her doctors and medical staff should have known or read the list of newly banned substances. I bet like Clic, who had a similar situation, that she will get a 4-6 month ban and I don’t think it will really effect her sponsorships or anything that much.

Drug was just banned last year, doubt it’s a drug that helps with strength or fitness…. And nothing to do with steroids.

It’s one if the miscellaneous drugs they ban because they affect accurate blood reading.

Old? Are you crazy? Everybody how is not a teenager is old?

Did you bothered to read about this drug before commenting “kept her fit”? Or you think you are so clever and know everything about a million of drugs? You are not.

    Use your brain.

She’s such a liar. She’s been taking a drug for 10 years for the flu? or diabetes that runs in the family but she did’t have, a 28 year old healthy woman. No one takes preventive pills to diabetes, the preventive measure is a diet and a healthy life style which we expect from a world champion in tennis.
