The legendary filmmaker died at 5pm on Tuesday (July 19) due to complications from pneumonia. He was in and out of the hospital recently after suffering a stroke, TMZ reports.

Garry got his start in Hollywood as a joke writer for comedians, which lead to a career in television. He created such series as Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, and Laverne and Shirley, which starred his sister Penny Marshall.

Garry started directing movies in the 1980s and some of his biggest hits include Beaches, Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries, Runaway Bride, and Raising Helen.
