Halle Berry Says Her Historic Oscar Win 'Meant Nothing' for Diversity

Back in 2002, Halle Berry became the first black actress to win the Best Actress Oscar (for Monster’s Ball), and now she’s speaking out fearing that win “meant nothing.”

“I was pretty sure Sissy Spacek was going to win. That [sentiment] just was what was ruminating in my spirit during that whole process,” Halle said about the year she won in a conversation with Teen Vogue. She continued that the 2016 nominations, which started the #OscarsSoWhite movement, got her thinking that nothing has really changed.

“I sat there and I really thought, ‘Wow, that moment really meant nothing. It meant nothing. I thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing,’” Halle said. “I was profoundly hurt by that, and saddened by that. It inspired me to try to get involved in other ways, which is why I want to start directing. I want to start producing more. I want to start making more opportunities for people of color. I have conversations more deeply with Academy members, and I’m trying to figure out how to help and add more diversity to the Academy.”

“These kinds of groups have to start changing and have to become more conscious and more inclusive,” Halle continued. “I think black people . . . people of color . . . only have a chance to win based on how much we’re allowed to put out. That says to me that we need more people of color writing, directing, producing—not just starring. We have to start telling stories that include us.”

Only eight women of color have been nominated in the Best Actress category since Halle took home her trophy.

I just wish we wouldn’t nominate people based on their skin color. “oh, we don’t have 3 black people nominated, let’s add them.” The Oscar should be won for good performances and not be given to people because of diversity.

  • j k

It goes deeper than that. There are not many films featuring black actors to begin with.

  • TaraTeller

    and who’s fault is that?

  • TaraTeller

Halle didn’t deserve that Oscar anyway. She’s a terrible actress.

  • Gina

But sometimes people of color who give good performances aren’t nominated.

i agree with her… plus how many white ppl won when they shouldn’t have… diana ross should’ve won for lady sings the blues… dorothy dandridge should of won for carmen!!! STOP THE BULL CRAP… WHITE PPL BEEN WIINING AWARDS FOR MEDIOCRE ROLES.. WHY NOT PPL OF COLOR… FOH!!

  • fadetogether

She deserve it more than anyone else.

  • Cooper

That to me is the bigger problem. The oscars is a symptom of the problem. The real problem starts behind the scenes.

  • 777

Diversity is the only reason she won the award to begin with, she didn’t deserve it.
Oscar nominations should be based on performance alone, and nothing else. The academy isn’t to blame for the low number of non-white nominees, the blame is on the fact that there aren’t enough roles for minorities. Wanna fight someing? Fight that.

  • TaraTeller

I disagree. It wasn’t a memorable performance but she showed her b oo b s when she said she would NEVER. she’s a bad actress who can’t get work. that’s why she’s resorted to posing near naked/naked pics on Instagram.

  • TaraTeller

perhaps black directors should form their own production companies and make movies not about slaves. Oprah has enough money to fund this.
these days, studios are only interested in making moves that make tons of money which is why we have endless comic book movies and Spider-Man in its third iteration. I love movies but rarely go anymore because it’s all sequels, prequels, remakes and endless comic book movies.

Notice this whining bitch doesn’t mention best actor or supporting actress cause it doesn’t fit to the whiny about diversity narrative.

13% population should win what?? A ward every decade that would be representative of the American population.

Never mentioned by whiny blacks is that black movies have no audience outside America and few major cities in Europe. The higest grossing majority black film ( doesn’t matter what it is drama, comedy ) most the grooms is around 50 million in total foreign markets. And as the international marekts become more important blacks will become even less important to the Academy.

    Diversity wouldn’t mean just blacks.

It’s the most stupid argumentation i’ve ever seen. If you don’t like her personally it’s your big problem, not her. As an actress she proved, that she can play various difficult roles, not only in “Monster’s Ball”. You see only what you WANT to see, that’s all. It’s a shame that you see only her boobs, and “near naked/naked pics” (which i don’t see btw). Well my advice to you, open your eyes widely, cause they almost closed right now.

  • TaraTeller

My advice for you is to go to Halle’s Instagram account to see the photos she’s posted of herself naked/semi naked. The woman is desperate for attention since her career is in the toilet. I SEE one crappy performance after the next from Ms. Berry. No wonder she doesn’t get work anymore and her TV show was cancelled. Very few people think like you about crazy Halle.

  • fadetogether

Lol, get a life girl, cause you delusional. After that, i won’t reply you anymore. Bye.

  • TaraTeller

    You’re delusional and thankfully gone.

  • bennfbeckmaN

    So are white people

  • Gina

You missed the point, honey. Of course people are gonna get snubbed, but white people are disproportionately represented when it comes to nominations. They have a greater chance of being nominated come award season than people of color.

  • bennfbeckmaN

Yeah I get it. But still, we should nominate everyone who deserves it. I don’t care if they are white or not. Besides, nobody ever complains about the fact that there are no asians or latinos there.

  • Gina

But that’s exactly the problem, we don’t always nominate those who deserve it. Asians and Latinos should be considered for nominations as well, and they rightfully do complain about it. It is true that America tends to see things as black vs white, when there are also other people of color to consider.

  • Coffy

Now that her career sucks you suddenly want to help people of color. You are so fake and pathetic. The only reason you want to direct and produce is because no one else is hiring you.

  • Coffy

I saw Denzel Washington performance and Casey Affleck and I cannot understand why Affleck won. Denzel was amazing in that movie.

  • Coffy

    I agree.

  • Coffy

Thank you, she is showing how desperate she is. Fifty year old white women can’t get jobs either, that’s why they are going to television.
