Zoey Deutch Receives Rising Star Award, Stresses the Importance of Arts Education

Zoey Deutch is joined by her mom Lea Thompson and sister Madelyn Deutch at an awards ceremony during the 2017 SCAD Savannah Film Festival on Saturday (October 28) in Savannah, Ga.

The 22-year-old actress was presented with the Rising Star Award and she opened up about the importance of arts education in an Instagram post after the event.

“Thank you to the SAVFF, @scaddotedu and @paulaswallace, who is a true patron of the arts, for giving me the rising star award🙃. Cool to get an award just for doing something that I love,” she said.

“And thank you for having two of my film’s screen at the festival. First, The Year Of Spectacular Men written by the star who also scored the film my big sister Madelyn Deutch, and directed by my very cool mom Lea Thompson. I also had the pleasure of producing and acting alongside them, and yes, we still like each other. I think. I hope. And FLOWER, which i’m so so excited to get to show the world. Directed by the truly amazing, truly neurotic, truly gifted, Max Winkler,” she added.

“It has been super duper duper super exciting to be here in this community of SUPPORT for the arts. I went to a performing arts high school, the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and much like SCAD or the Savannah Film Fest, these were institutions that had a backbone of human beings who still believe artists need places to grow and develop. That art needs space to breathe, to be constructively critiqued, to be cared for. I think, in a time of unrest, arts education is one of the first things to be underserved, and so being here at the Savannah Film Festival among the SCAD facilities, the teachers, and all the energy is beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for having me! Yay!” Zoey concluded.

Wendi McLendon-Covey & 'Goldbergs' Cast Celebrate 100th Episode at Paley!

Wendi McLendon-Covey is all smiles as she hits the carpet at The Goldbergs: 100th Episode Celebration held at The Paley Center for Media as part of the PaleyLive Fall Season on Tuesday (October 17) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 48-year-old actress was joined at the event by her co-stars Sam Lerner and Hayley Orrantia, executive producer Doug Robinson, and director-actress Lea Thompson.

The ABC sitcom is set to go back to John Hughes’ filmography in the season 5 premiere with a tribute to Weird Science.

“I hope it means she finds a life outside of pestering her kids,” Wendi, who stars as family matriarch Beverly, tells EW. “Although, I’m not sure that will ever happen; she was put on Earth to smother those children. But I’m hoping she takes a self-defense class, maybe starts a neighborhood watch. I look forward to her mid-life crisis and digging her way out of that.”

Alyssa Milano's 'Me Too' Tweet Raises Sexual Assault Awareness

The term #MeToo trended on Twitter all day on Sunday (October 15), thanks in large part to Alyssa Milano.

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal, the 44-year-old actress tweeted an idea: “Suggested by a friend: If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”

“If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet,” she wrote.

Responses have come flooding in ever since from hundreds of women, including “me too” replies from Debra Messing and Anna Paquin.

Lea Thompson, Kristin Bauer, Sophia Bush and Anika Noni Rose are just a few of the other stars who have replied to the powerful movement.

See Alyssa‘s tweet, as well as the replies, below.

Lea Thompson & Daughter Madelyn Deutch Premiere Their Movie 'Year of Spectacular Men'

Lea Thompson and Madelyn Deutch pose with cast members from their film The Year of Spectacular Men during its 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival premiere on Friday night (June 16) in Santa Monica, Calif.

Madelyn wrote and starred in the movie with sister Zoey Deutch and their mom Lea, while Lea also directed the film.

Cast members Cameron Monaghan, Jesse Bradford, Zach Roerig, Nicholas Braun, and Melissa Bolona stepped out for the premiere.

Here is the synopsis: “In the year after graduating college, Izzy struggles to navigate the seemingly incessant failures of adulthood, the reality of a substandard dating pool and a debilitating fear of top-sheets, all in between X-Files marathons. Comically unsuccessful in love over the course the year, including five half-hearted relationships with astoundingly self-centered men, Izzy resigns herself to the support of her mother and sister, who are struggling with their own relationship problems. Seeing herself in them, Izzy gradually gains the confidence to be honest and vulnerable.”

Zoey wasn’t able to attend the premiere as she’s in New York City working on an upcoming film.

Hopefully the film will get picked up by a studio so we can see it in theaters soon!
