Blu-Ray and DVD Releases

Ant-Man – Another great addition to the Marvel cinematic universe, Ant-Man comes out on Blu-Ray 3D today. The film follows con-man Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, who comes across an amazing suit that allows him not only to shrink in size but also increase in strength. Scott later learns that the suit was created by a brilliant scientist Dr. Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas, who tasks Scott to fight a former protege who is using similar technology for evil.

As usual, with all Marvel films, the Blu-Ray treatment is amazing. The film also stands up well in 3D and is great for a film such as this where there are many scenes where the 3D effect really accentuates the action.

The usual favorites such as deleted and extended scenes along with the hilarious gag reels are included in the Blu-ray/DVD. It also includes 3 featurettes: “Making of an Ant-Sized Heist” which dives into the making of the film, “Let’s go to the Maccroverse” which looks at the special effects of the films, and the Newsfront which features the news cast clips from the film.

This film is definitely worth a pickup as it also completes phase 2 of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. There’s also an awesome exclusive set of all the Phase 2 films for sale exclusively on Amazon.

X-Files: The Complete Series – This 55-disc monster set finally gets the Blu-Ray treatment featuring all 9 seasons of the riveting X-Files series. The series follows two FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigate strange paranormal and extra-terrestrial activities while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.

This release has a ton of extra content, including 23 hours of extras, documentaries, and commentaries from the creator and production team. It also features Deleted Scenes along with tons of featurettes and interviews.

This is the first time the X-Files series gets the blu-ray treatment and has been remastered from the original 35mm negatives. The series is presented in 16:9 format so it adapts well to modern televisions. The sound was also a special treat – as most of us watched it on lesser television sets back in the day, it was fantastic to listen to the remastered sound on a newer system.

The price on this currently is hefty, however, keep in mind you’re getting 202 episodes of a great series. With the new remastered look and sound and the new X-files Miniseries just around the corner on January 24th, 2016 this is a solid pick-up for anyone who watched this series before. Watching it again with the new treatment makes it feel like a new series again.

Minions – The prequel to the popular Despicable Me series is here featuring the lovable yellow minions in a movie all their own. The new Blu-ray/DVD gives the origin story of the lovable Minions as they follow villain after villain in this hilarious animated film.

The Blu-Ray/DVD is an extra treat as it offers 3 mini-movies that were not featured when the film was released in theaters. The Blu-Ray also includes Deleted Scenes and a featurette highlighting the making of the film.
