Will Smith Boycotted the 1989 Grammys Because of Diversity Issues
Will Smith beams at the premiere of his movie Concussion on Wednesday (January 27) at the Callao Cinema in Madrid, Spain.
The 47-year-old actor and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are boycotting the 2016 Oscars due to a lack of diversity, and a video recently pulled from the ET archives shows it isn’t Will’s first boycott.
Will boycotted the 1989 Grammys along with his musical partner DJ Jazzy Jeff because the rap categories weren’t being televised.
“We don’t have the problem with the Grammy as an award or the Grammys as an institution, we just had a problem with the 1989 design of the awards show,” Will told ET at the time. “We chose to boycott. We feel that it’s a slap in the face.”
