Sam Smith Beats Lady Gaga at Oscars 2016, Dedicates Award to LGBT Community

Sam Smith pulled off a major upset by beating Lady Gaga for the Best Original Song award at the 2016 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (February 28) in Hollywood.

The 23-year-old singer won the award alongside songwriter Jimmy Napes for their song “Writing’s On the Wall” from the James Bond movie Spectre. The favorite to win was Gaga‘s song “Til It Happens to You.”

Sam said during his acceptance speech that he thinks he might be the first openly gay man to win an Oscar and dedicated his award to the LGBT community.

Gaga looked like she was very proud of Sam and she was seen smiling and clapping for him throughout his speech!
