R. Kelly Accused of Holding Women in a Cult, 'Against Their Will'

R. Kelly has been accused of holding several young women against their will in what is being called an abusive “cult,” according to a new report from BuzzFeed.

Reporter Jim DeRogatis, the man who years ago broke the story about the R&B singer’s videotape that allegedly showed him having sex with a 14-year-old girl, is now reporting on this new story.

Three sets of parents have come forward saying that they brought their daughters to R. Kelly to have him help with their music careers, but that he brainwashed them. Several people who are former associates of the singer are supporting the claims.

“It was as if she was brainwashed. [She] looked like a prisoner – it was horrible,” one of the parents told BuzzFeed News. “I hugged her and hugged her. But she just kept saying she’s in love and [Kelly] is the one who cares for her. I don’t know what to do. I hope that if I get her back, I can get her treatment for victims of cults. They can reprogram her. But I wish I could have stopped it from happening.”

R. Kelly is reportedly holding the women at his homes in Atlanta and Chicago, makes them call him “daddy,” films sexual encounters with them, forbids them from contacting their families, and abuses them, all according to the article.

Police have made welfare checks to the homes, but these did not lead to any charges.

R. Kelly
‘s lawyer released a statement to BuzzFeed in response to the claims.

“We can only wonder why folks would persist in defaming a great artist who loves his fans, works 24/7, and takes care of all of the people in his life,” Chicago-based lawyer Linda Mensch wrote in her statement. “He works hard to become the best person and artist he can be. It is interesting that stories and tales debunked many years ago turn up when his goal is to stop the violence; put down the guns; and embrace peace and love. I suppose that is the price of fame. Like all of us, Mr. Kelly deserves a personal life. Please respect that.”
