Michelle Obama Talks Time in the White House, Says 'Making Mistakes Was Not an Option'
Michelle Obama is dishing about what readers can expect in her upcoming memoir.
The 54-year-old former First Lady looked pretty in a yellow dress as she opened up about her new memoir Becoming at the 2018 American Association Annual Conference on Friday night (June 22) in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“Barack and I knew very early that we would be measured by a different yardstick,” Michelle said in regards to being the first black family in the White House. “Making mistakes was not an option for us. Not that we didn’t make mistakes, but we had to be good — no, we had to be outstanding — at everything we did…When you’re the first, you’re the one that’s laying the red carpet down for others to follow.”
Michelle went on to share how she feels when people only see her for her skin color, instead of for who she is and what she’s done.
“It’s just a shame that sometimes people will see me, and they will only see my color, and then they’ll make certain judgments about that,” Michelle said. “That’s dangerous, for us to dehumanize each other in that way. We are all just people.”
Becoming will be hitting bookshelves on November 13 and you can pre-order it here.
